have you ever been harassed at work? most of us say yes, thinking of those some very icky pax, i guess... but what if it is another crewmember? the purser today was very touchy-feely and kept asking me out while i made very clear that the answer was no. had his hands up and down my arse and back all day. eew. my seniority is not of the highest so didn't quite know what to do... what would you do / what have you done?

That’s not acceptable. Being junior does make it tricky, so if it happens again, react to it calmly but preferably in front of passengers as you then have witnesses to his behavior if something comes of it. He to should feel stupid enough after that anyway!!!!

How to you get the the idea to make a scene from the words ‘react to it calmly’ The reason I said CALMLY in front of passengers is that they are not influenced at all by the powers that be in the company and are there for more likely to support in this instance. Get real Left Wing, I am sure you have heard these words at work before ‘I would love to help but I don’t really want to get involved’ People in the work place today are scared to be labeled as trouble makers.

Princess, i don't really know about the regulations in your airline , probably few hints might help you stop this " PURSER" from what he's trying.
can you submit a confidential report ? do you a have a direct manager with whom you can disclose the issue ?
at the end of the day , the PIC of the flight should be responsible of his/her crew, and should either take action or logged in his voyage report for line manager decison, don't look small because you are junior,especially when your purser doesn't know how to lead by exemple, all the best.

Hi Princess,

As a Captain; my crew have approached me with some similar problems that you are experiencing. The problems were influenced from ground staff, passangers and male hosties.

The crew have approached me in flight and on the ground I have always have had strong words regardless of passangers etc once we had landed.

In my opinion, regardless of where you are would would not grab a girls ass in a Sopping center etc.

Next time this happens, call the Captain. Taking it to HR can be long and messy and the aviation industry is too small to start getting a name as a trouble maker. Even in your situation.

It's harsh but reality.

Remember the Captain is your boss so take it to he/her!

If the harrasment is more than just verbal and he is physically touching you on your rear etc especially if it's been witnessed by another, you could always go down the route of threatening to have him reported / nicked for indecent assault.

Princess - After your next flight with him (and only if you feel that you can) let him know that you are uncomfortable with what he is doing. Don't say it in front of everyone, just make sure there is someone around to help if you need it. If he makes out that he doesn't feel like he is doing anything wrong and doesn't listen to you then you'll have to make a complaint to your manager. You may not be the only crew member who he is doing this to. Just because you are a junior it doesn't mean you have to put up with this. Also this guy is abusing his position of Purser.
I hope that the situation gets sorted quickly for your sake, there is nothing was than dreading to come to work because you are worried you might be flying with him.:sad:

thanks all for your advice!

after thinking about this for a while i've come to this conclusion: next time he does it, i'll report him. i'll talk to my group manager and tell what happened. before this i will tell someone else on the same flight in order to have some kind of back up. if, for some weird reason, i would get a reputation of a troublemaker etc., i will just live with it. i'm flying with the guy next roster so we'll see what happens. of course i will tell him as well to keep his hands off me. again.

It's great when you've got trustworthy pilots to help you out but at some airlines unfortunately it's the pilots who are the pervs! NOT good for CRM.

In this case go to your manager AND the pilot's manager.

Hey Princess,

Exactly the same thing happened to me when I was a junior. In fact I was terrified and mortified on my first Supie flight. The purser insisted on grabbing me on every occasion and practically chasing me around the cabin.

Unfortunately, many of these sleaze-bags relalize their power over new crew or "fresh-meat" as they like to refer to them. Even several years on I still come across the odd wandering hand or encroachment of personal body-space. I can normally deter this with a disgusted and scornful glare and sarcastic remark but it's taken years of experience! It's difficult as a new-joiner to not feel intimidated by a senior, but remember, "we're all part of a team" and "communication is essential". Next time you're in this situation, as you would with inappropriate behavior from a pax, explain that you have a problem with him being quite so intimate. If you don't want to rock the boat you can always ask his advice on how to support your close (fictional) friend who's taking a senior to the cleaners on grounds of sexual harrassment or merely brag about your boyfriend who is built like the proverbial brick outhouse with a balck-belt in tae kwon do and insanely jealous!
