The pilots of the 2 crashed Su-27's are sentenced to 8 and 14 years jail on charges of ignoring orders, negligence and breach of air regulations. The local deputy airforce commander is sentenced for 6 years and the responsible atc 5 years.

3 years ago 77 people died during the crash at the Lvov Ukrain Airshow, amongst them 20 children.

One Su-27 with two crew on board was involved in this accident, Capt.KAOS.

No expert, but seems a bit harsh...

77 people might disagree with you - if they were still alive.

This was indeed tragic. However, it would be interesting to know just how the local ATC could have prevented anything if the aircraft was "ignoring orders". It's incredible that the ATC'ers get 5 years!

It is so unjust that something that is COMPLETELY beyond YOUR control lands you in jail for 5 years. It does not serve any purpose whatsoever.

Agree with A4. Seems pointless with regards to ATC. People go to airshows because they like to see the displays and smell the kero. Last thing you expect is to get wiped out by high speed FOD while you sit in the crowd on your favourite deck chair watching the display. Didn't follow the AERO's sequence and the control measures, however was the sequence flown "OFF CROWD" (Parallel to the line on the crowd?)

Hope we can all learn something from this and move on. Air displays are great, even better when you hit your sequence and it looks clean and tight.

:ok:

Mike51, I stand corrected. This airshow disaster in fact was the subject of the very first thread I participated 3 years ago, so I should have known that :(

PS
In CNN's link the ATC is being described as "the unit's head of flight security" and is jailed for 4 years.

Flight Security Officer is what we would call Flight Safety Officer, rather than some Plod taking your nail clippers at check-in type security.

Always a potential point of confusion when working with Russian aviation folk.

Now, if Maj. Scmidt of the Illinois ANG reads about these sentences he might shut up about the raw deal he got from the USAF...but probably not.
