Yesterday a 404 belonging to Zan Air came into Arusha in Tanzania in really bad weather. The aircraft carrying passengers from Seronera in the Serongeti bounced the plane and managed to damage the undercarriage and put a ripple into the inboard section on the star board wing.

He was apparently new to the job.. poor guy

Got this from an Arusha based friend today:

____________________________________________
Saw the 404 fly around supposedly in VFR conditions,
but actually in ILS Cat 1 conditions. The guy and his
pax were very lucky. Arusha has quite a few hills/
Mountains around and he managed to miss them all. We
were all waiting at the airport to hear a loud bang
from the hills. The landing was a bit rough at high
speed and part of the right wing must have received
some wringing moment. The pilot was going to fly the
plane to Nairobi today for further inspection and
repairs. It belongs to wings of Zanzibar. A dodgy
outfit I would call it.

Appears that someone might have been trying his luck a bit to hard.

Why anyone would fly VFR in that weather is beyond me. We landed in Kilimanjaro the same day and the weather was almost CAT1 minima. We only saw the runway at about 3 DME coming down on the glideslope. Cloud base not too bad, but a helluva lot of rain!

Just glad everyone was OK.

A 206 that took off just a little earlier had said that the vis was so bad he could hardy see the end of the runway. A lot of people had advised the pilot to proceed to Kili but for some reason we will probably never know he chose to ignore them.

However you never really know what was going through the pilots mind so cant critiize too much... but i cant imagine what it was!

OK 406, it all falls into place now!

We'll just blame the delay on us having to do manual loadsheets, ha ha!

With my luck I'll be off to Baghdad or some other beautiful area after this.

Take care, will listen for you on 131.8.

Take care
K

PS. She's back.
