I see from my printed itinerary HKG-LHR in mid July that the equipment is Airbus 340.Is this a recent 'departure' from the customary 747-400 on this route ??
What is the advantage to passengers of having an electronic ticket when one has to carry a paper itinerary otherwise ground staff will not allow one to board the aircraft ??

Can't answer the 2nd part but the 340 has been on that route for probably 2 years or so now.

Regarding the 2nd question, the E-Ticket is probably the result of evolving IT requirement. From an info system point of view, an E-Ticket is a transaction record. And with a database, you can get a lot of information from a collection of transaction records. It will make CX management's job easier to figure out how each route is performing given certain parameters. It can also help them keep track of membership usage. You still receive a boarding pass when you walk up to the check-in counter.

One of the three daily flights each way is an A340.
