Glen Dell, the reigning world unlimited aerobatic champ has survived a prang in his Slick 360 at Margate. A SAAF BK117 has scooped him to St. Augustines.

You're using up those nine lives Donga! Say a prayer for a lucky (and extremely talented) guy.

Margate - World aerobatic champion Glen Dell was involved in a plane crash at Margate on Friday, on the eve of an air show at the South Coast town.

Organiser Vicky Erasmus told Sapa that Dell's aircraft, a Flick Extra 300, came down in a sugarcane field adjacent to the Margate airport.

Dell was rushed to St Augustine's Hospital in Durban.

SABC radio news reported that eye witness Renier Bezuidenhout had watched the plane making "magnificent manoeuvres".

"He was doing magnificent tricks. All of a sudden there was smoke coming out of his engine."

Dell had been involved in a training camp preceeding the show, said Erasmus.

Sister Tessa Goldstone of the hospital's trauma unit said he arrived at 14:20.

"He is in pain, but stable. We have no X-rays as yet," she said.

Be Careful out there, Boys and Girls, it appears in the field of aerobatics, we are seeing more than our fair share of accidents. A lot of these machines have been flown to the max (safely) and its tough to get more out of them. Its becoming more demanding on Pilots to stretch them further.
My hat goes off to these Aerobats as they are really Precision Pilots. If you have not seen a demonstration it is certainly worth it.
As it is said they have Balls so big it requires a Wheel Barrow to carry them...................seems same for the Girls too.

Heres hoping for Blue Skys for this Aviator soon....

Saw his display at the Rand airshow - very impressive but that spin recovery was low!!!

Anyone else see the display and think the same?

Highlight of the show for me though.

Glen is out of hospital - fractured ankle and a compressed disc, but otherwise ok..

Hopefully he will be flying in the comps next month.

Wheels up - spin recovery was low, I nearly needed a nappy change then - anyone else but the World Champ, I think he would have needed one as well...

All speed with your return Glen.. :ok: :ok:

Cheers

What a pity, glad you're okay Glen. Can't be there, flying the line, but what happened? Seen many of your shows, what can we learn? Get out of plaster soon....
