Many that have made it into the airlines knew no one in the business, so it is not the be all and end all, but it undoubtedly helps.

Hi there,
In my humble opinion, having industry connections is valuable, as long as you're not a w*%ker.
I personally know 5 pilots who fly for different major airlines. (Qantas, Cathay and BA) Four of them had good connections with Captains/FO's or management prior to being offered a job. The last one was just in the right place at the right time.
It doesn't hurt to try and cultivate some contacts if you are able.
