If you have 500 hours, they will give you a type rating straight away, otherwise it's the check ride

As LASORS and FCL-2 state, it's not quite that simple Phill. Yes you need 500 hours on type, but you also have to have the type endorsed on an ICAO licence and also pass a Proficiency Check (should be Skill test I think) with a JAA TRE.

It's not correct to say you just need 500 hours, as a colleague has found out this week; he has about 1000 hours and carried out an LST with a JAA TRE, but the country he operates in has not issued a licence; only a validation with the type stamped on it (non-standard I know). Result? No JAR type rating.

It is also incorrect to state that if you don't have the 500 hours you need to do a 'check ride'; the only other route to a type rating is to do the full conversion at an approved TRTO With the 'check ride/LST' at the end, of course).

That's what they told me at the Belgrano when I wanted to do the same with my Canadian AS355 rating. One would assume that if you had 500 hours, you would have it on an ICAO licence, but I can see that sometimes that would not be the case. The way they worded it, it would have been the same procedure as the Canadians, that is accept it straightaway with no check ride, if you had a recent PPC.

Looks like you have to check what they say as well :\

I would imagine their perspective will vary, depending on where you have been flying, to some extent, and also who happens to be on the desk at the time!

I can only quote what the regs say, what I was told by PLD, and what I have just witnessed happen this week to someone who didn't have a formal 'type rating' on a licence.

Raises the question about those with FAA licences who are not required to have type ratings on their licence for aircraft below 5700 kg?

There was a guy in Dubai with the same problem recently. Yes, the FAA bit is interesting.....

Yeah, I have just under 500hrs on an AS350, but all those hours were in the U.S.A and under FAA, I am now converting to JAA and I`m sure they`ll give me a hard time trying to get a type rating on it.... Just hope I won`t have to do a full FTO Type rating course.

Has anybody been able to get a UK (JAA) type rating from a credit of there ICAO Rating? (Assuming you are a holder of a JAA licence) I have 500+ hours on both types; I would like to get credited. And both aircraft are on my Canadian/Australian/New Zealand licenses (type specific not group ratings). The LASOR’s don’t really answer what is required; would I still have to do a check ride with an instructor?

MCA

I recently got a rating over from FAA, the requirement they set for me was:

100hrs on type, PC within preceeding 12months: Single PC

100hrs on type, PC outside of preceeding 12months: Recurrency training as suggested by FTO, then PC

less than 100hrs on type: Type rating course and skill test

Hope this helps... 'course I am not residing in the U.K. But under the JAA Authoritaaay nonetheless

Let me get this right. If you had say 450 hours flying around the Canadian bush in a Squirrel, the UK authoritys will want you to do a type rating course and check ride to see if your proficient on type?
What a load of toss...

That pretty much sums it up ....
