Six hurt in emergency landing
08/06/2005 11:34 - (SA)

Cape Town - Six people were injured after an Air Zimbabwe Boeing 737 plane with 93 passengers on board was forced to make an emergency landing at Johannesburg International Airport on Wednesday morning.

Airport Company of SA spokesperson Jacqui O'Sullivan told News24 the aircraft was approaching the airport to land when the flight captain alerted the control tower that he would be making an emergency landing.

He stated smoke in the cockpit as the reason for his decision.

O'Sullivan said Acsa emergency vehicles were on standby when the plane landed.

Emergency services network ER24 spokesperson Ashley Cook said the pasengers and six crew were evacuated from the aircraft via emergency chutes.

Six passengers were injured. Three of them were treated at the airport clinic and discharged, while three others were referred to Harmelia Medi-Clinic in Edenvale for treatment and observation.

One of them complained of back pain, another was a seven-month pregnant woman and a third passenger was an epileptic who had fainted when the plane landed.

Clinic manager Rodney van Zyl said the three were being attended to. He said there were no visible injuries.

O'Sullivan said the visibly shaken passengers were taken to the terminal building in a shuttle bus. They were then taken to the Acsa lounge.

She said: "The passengers were calm, but clearly distressed. The captain and the crew handled the situation well and managed to keep them calm."

By 10:45 they were returning to the aircraft to collect their personal belongings.

O'Sullivan said the passengers were free to leave once they had collected their baggage.

O'Sullivan told Sapa the aircraft was towed away from the runway.

The aircraft was on a flight from Harare to Johannesburg.
