EK vs Ryanair

Ok i want constructive critisism about whether to stay at EK as F/O or go to Ryanair as Captain, the EK command is still some way off ............for unknown reasons.....

Ok Trashed,

1/ Where do you want to live.

2/ How old are you and are you looking just for money and not a package

3/ What type of flying do you want to do. Short haul, multi sector or long/medium haul.

4/ EK has its inherrent problems. Are you one who really has had enough or living here. Remember you will be paying money to get home.

5/ Do you want to pay tax again

6/ Small as it may seem, you are going to have to make provision for a pension fund. The provident fund is still a way of making a little and putting some away

7/ Be completely brutal and list all your expenses that you will have to fork out and when you have, are you really better off.

8/ Have you had a command before. If so can you wait longer. How long is it going to be realistically for you to get a command here.

9/ If you have family, are they unsettled. How will they cope being put back into the UK (if that is where you are going to be based)

10/ If you are single what is your aim and future prospects v.v staying here and going there.

Thats just a few things to start on.

Well you make some good points, i have a house already in UK so moving back is easy , family doesnt want to leave DXB.
Being on Airbus and no growth a command appears to be 4-5 years away.
In theory i could go to Ryanair and if not liking it go back to ek on 777 on a fast track and still get a command quicker than staying.
If i was single i would have no questions the deal with Ryanair is great without kids..............

We have 45 airbuses now and a further 65 on order for delivery between now and 2012. Strangest definition of no growth I've ever heard. By the time you go to Ryanair and "no liking it" apply to come back the 777 deliveries might be complete. See Uplinks post, it hits the nail on the head. Anyway, whatever you chose I hope it works out for you old son. Bon chance.

Uplink has all the valid questions.EK sells its deal ideally to "families",housing schooling etc,etc,for which you are one.

The deal whilst once very good is looking a little tarnished,due to the extraordinary growth of DXB and inflation,which your pay has not matched,especially as an FO.The cost of living has soared and whilst perhaps for many the EK deal is attractive financially I would suggest for Europeans,Aus,NZ,N.Americans and Scandis it is not,this is why these people are now leaving.

The "dollars and cents" are way out of comparison and perhaps that fact is now rather belatedly for many being addressed.

Ask yourself,if the command came next week would you stay?

So is it command time you want or the the money?(see above).

It will come,but the problem is when? And once you have it,will you still be wanting to go to Ryannair to escape the lifestyle issues in DXB?

4-5 years for your command on Airbus?? When did you join, last week??? :confused:
IMHO it wouldn't take much longer then 3 years for a newjoiner to get a command, maybe just wait 2 weeks untill Le Bourget is over and see what changes to fleet will be announced over there (A340-600??)
But even with a delay in the A380, I can't see any F/O in the fleet waiting for more then another 3.5 years for command. Unless they going the DEC way again...:yuk:
So worst position you can be in is joined between 1 and 2 years ago, and having to wait for another 2.5 or 3 years...
And are you sure you want to fly low-cost for the rest of your carreer?? City-hopping without any layovers?

sounds like women saying "...now thats totally different ..." when they do the same thing you got her bashing for.

I have flown for two of the three locost airlines in the UK at the time, and I can say to you that it was fun, but hard work as well. I am not saying that Emirates is not, but at least you have for the moment a better quality of life here than flying for EZ or Ryanair. Go was the best time I had, great people to work with and more organized than EZY when I was there. I do not have first hand knowledge of RYR but it must be similar to EZY/GO so I am sure you will work your butt off. If you do go back to the UK and get in now you will get to do training etc, thus you will brake the monotony of flying 4 sector days with being in the sim as well. Maybe it is for you, maybe not. RYR does not have night stops, they do not have any other type than 737s so you will get to fly that for a long time..... Have you flown for locost carriers or is it your first attempt? Is this a move because you are fed up with the place or because your command has been put back. I have been here now for two years and I think there will be delays in command upgrades on the airbus fleet unless things change, but my decision to leave or stay would not be based on command prospects in the short term, but instead lifestyle, pay package family happiness in the long term.
I would look into BA or Virgin, but why do you want to go to RYR, why do you want to leave Emirates. Have you worked for RYR before, do you have inside info on the place? There are a few guys here for RYR and you can speak to them regarding their experience...

Im between a rock and a hard place, Its really tough when your friends are getting fast traked on 777 and coming here expecting the same but being airbus (no more fastracks) ,now blowing out to realisticly 4 years does chew away at you .
Guys that havnt started yet will get commands before most of us here, if the rumours of the 345-6s is true the airbus commands will blow beyond 5 years , you think its fair to be here 5 years without a command and after being told a fast track would happen yet it is still happening on 777 as well as 3 year guys overtaking.
It is about money and they should give bypass or transition upgrades , most major carriers still do that .

3-5 years is not a long time to wait for a heavy command, i would swop my job for yours in a heartbeat. take a long hard look at FR before you leap, talk to the guys there that have come from FR then count to ten and go anywhere but here. seriously.

3, 4 or even 5 years to a wide bodied command? Come on, get real. All of us did around 12 to 15 years to get into the left seat of a wide body. Just wait your time, do your apprenticeship, have a laugh and enjoy the layovers! ;)

To anyone at Ryanair / Easy, when was the last time you had a great time in a 5 star hotel? Me? Oh it was yesterday! :p

Seriously, whilst I empaphise, your Boeing colleagues had to wait whilst the Airbus chaps were upgraded, now it's your turn to wait. How long? A few more months, maybe even as long a sa year. If you can't wait that long, then by all means go back to the UK and the wonderful lifestyle that the lo cost carriers can give you.

Despite the many downsides of this place, there are more far worse off and most of them live back in the UK working for Stelios and O'leary......

Well whats your decision, Trashed Aviator. I left Ek and joined BA , allthough i initially enjoyed living in Dxb, i got fed up with it in the end, so decided to move back to the uk.

Despite getting a tax free salary, i am better of in the uk.
Dubai use to be good when i first lived there, but it`s getting like tenerife.

Decent money, home every night, able to spend more time with the family, easily make 'Last Orders' at your local watering hole, COMMAND, good craic at work, friendlier working enviroment, easy accessibilty of top quality porn....oops!, safe(r) roads, as for tax, you'll probably be making more in sector pay to offset against income tax, EUROPE, greenery, no long overnight flights, no jet lag or feeling permanently knackered, fun at work...spending the best part of the last 18 months looking at what my friends back in charter and Lo cost have in terms of quality of life, money, pension schemes, promotion opportunities...they are just some of the reasons I'm leaving.

One other thought Trashed,

I think once you leave, in this present climate, there are very few that will be able to return. I dont think IMHO that EK would take you back in a hurry. There is always Etihad for a quick command. I had a colleague who went to Qatar for a quick command. Boy is he regretting that move.

The other thing I was thinking about. Why would someone leave the Gulf to set up back home, with the thought in their mind of possibly coming back. If you are thinking that, do you really hate it that much.

sorry to but in here guys, but just wondering what the lifestyle is like for pilots out in Dubai, compared to that back in the UK.

I mean is Dubai a good place to live? Expensive etc etc, and also whats the salary like at Emirates for typical SFO? Is it generally a happy place to be?

Just curious really, somewhere id love to visit one day soon.
