Forty junior officers and senior non-commissioned officers from across Iraq began instructor training with the Army's Infantry Battle School at Brecon on 31 May 2005. Once qualified as military instructors, they will be prepared to train other Iraqi officers in the Iraq Security Forces (ISF).

Through world-class British Army training, the course aims to 'train the trainers' in the qualities of leadership, military skills, instructional techniques and team building.

The training will develop skills that will enable the Iraqi officers to deliver their own basic officer training courses and professional courses for ISF officer-students safely and effectively in the Iraqi Military Academy. It will also reinforce and complement the ongoing training of ISF personnel in Iraq already being undertaken by British forces.

Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingram said:

"The British Army has a legacy of being a leader in training forces from around the world. The training of Iraqi officers at the Army's unique facilities in Brecon not only endorses that legacy, but underpins the UK's commitment to Iraq by enabling the ISF to develop and take responsibility for security."

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Goldsack, Commanding Officer of the Infantry Battle School, added:

"At Brecon, the Army has the specialist capability to provide world class military training using purpose built facilities. The training we can deliver is second to none. Bringing the Iraqi students to Wales means that they can benefit from these facilities and our resident instructors. We are delighted to be involved with developing these officers and NCOs to a high standard that will equip them with the key skills to train others."

The Iraqi students were initially selected by their own Commanders and have been chosen because of their suitability for a future instructional role. The course is based upon British Army junior leadership training and will run for three months. It will be tailored to meet the needs of the Iraqi Army, taking into account the different environment in which they are required to operate.
