If they are not enough in the news ... :}

An SAA hostess accused of stealing travellers cheques, jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash from a passenger's hand luggage appears on a theft charge in court on Monday.

The 26-year-old was arrested on Friday afternoon shortly after she disembarked from an SAA long-haul flight from London to Cape Town.

"We were tipped off by someone (who allegedly saw) what had happened. The hostess was searched during a check at the arrivals terminal. She had in her possession travellers cheques to the value of R20 000, a gold ring valued at R10 000 and some cash and was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of stolen property," police spokesperson Randall Stoffels said.

Approached for comment SAA spokesperson Onkgopotse Tabane said: "The person faces a charge of theft. We view this matter in a very serious light. When something like this happens we discipline the employee, but I do not want to pre-empt this matter as it is under investigation."

What do you expect if the big boss spends big money on helicopter flights, jets to cross the channel and lives it up in fancy hotels in England.

Marketing DIRECTOR of, shall we just say, a certain (government) tourism organisation - convicted of R2.5 million fraud,

Members of Parliament - convicted of fraud (the "Travelgate" scandal as the press called it),

Various Mayors, councillors etc - all convicted of any number of crimes..

Sort of like the SAA FO (EE model) who was caught with a few kgs of heroin in a hidden compartment in his flight bag and accused the Captain of planting it there!! He is still running around even though he should be in jail.

This has been going on for some time.
A couple of years ago I was on a SAA flight to Atlanta. On the flight to Seattle I discovered that most of my cash dollars had dissapeared from my wallet. I had no idea how or where this could have happened.
I met up with a SAA B767 crew in Seattle during their Sim training and told them about my loss.
They told me then about this huge problem that SAA have. Whether this is the first one they caught or if there were others I don't know.
It makes me sick!!

Of course one does not want to get too emotional in this, as theft is theft, and that seems to be the general pasttime in this land nowadays, but one has to ask where was she arrested?

If she was arrested whilst still in the international side, ie the air side, she will well be able to get off on a technicallity - her defence would be that she was going to hand the stuff in at the bank and lost property. You laugh, but this is true.

It would have been a different case, had she been arrested once, she had landed and left the building. Then it is too late to hand the stuff in and that is theft - no doubt about that.

One wonders where she was actually arrested. Dont get me wrong I am not defending her, but as is often the case, people are arrested too quickly and they are able to get off on technicalities.

Theft is theft and I think guilty parties should be put away for a long time, but one hopes the powers that be did their work properly. The law must also run its way.

Granted that unemployment is north of 30% and inflation is about 5% (not so bad actually), u do have 50% of the population below the poverty level (which was greater duing apartheid era), so u will have some major problems (Crime, Aids, corruption, all the vices that come in a value pack due to poverty etc...).

Hopefully this turbulence will not last forever. I think ZA has come along way since the end of apartheid, and things will only get better. According to the B*ll S*itter pessimists that "predicted" a civil war when ANC took over, things aren't so bad.

According to economists, the economy is actually booming, unless I've been reading some major propaganda :suspect: Alot of the people who think things in ZA are not getting better simply miss the good ol Botha days when the majority were not even considered in the economic equation. Nothing against anyone here, but usually the road to positive change is not always so smooth. Alot of African countries have been and are far worse off to be in than ZA. Lets stay positive. :E

I see a post of mine got dumped. It obviously hit home and was in answer to Bush Pilots Statement "Alot of African countries have been and are far worse off to be in than ZA"

Telling the truth today is NOT Politically Correct.

I'm sorry Bert - it's been made clear in the past - we cannot allow the reference to "black" or "white" or for that matter any cultural ring-fencing. This forum prides itself in being a multi-cultural discussion forum where the color of one's skin is transparent.

Keep it that way.

OK, understand 4hp, but its a fact not an accusation. A good majority of the whining on this forum is brought about by just that issue.
So ...moving on, let me repeat part of my dumped posting as it did not refer to color...........
An incident that occured to me was at JNB where as I was going through the screening to board for MZ, I was instructed to place my wallet on a tray and the lady would take it through. I thought that very strange but since it did not have any money I thought I would see what would happen. When the tray came around the machine a mat had been placed over my wallet. Had I been in a hurry or not paying attention, Im sure that the screeners would have shared the contents.
That should smooth things a bit..........

Bert,

A very funny story popped to mind after reading the last couple of posts. The funny part is so transparent that any effort to disguise it would be seen through instantly however. I may give it a whirl if I can figure out how to avoid having the telling of an interaction between two uniquely different people be construed as offending boundaries of decorum so stated by 4hp. A description of the personality of the two done only to set the stage for that event that occurred would create a mental image of the two that in itself would remove that transparency sought by 4hp. But for the life of me....I just cannot find a way to tell it without fostering that mental image in the readers mind. Thus, a funny African yarn bites the dust. I will send you an e-mail and tell you the story outside the forum here.
