Cape Town - A British Airways/Comair flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Johannesburg International Airport on Wednesday morning.

According to the airport's communications manager Jacqui O'Sullivan, the 727 Boeing's fire warning light came on and the pilot decided to switch one of the engines off.

The plane landed safely and none of the 121 passengers on board was injured.

The plane was travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg.

Emergency: Plane lands safely
25/05/2005 16:20 - (SA)

Johannesburg - A Boeing 737 carrying 121 passengers made an emergency landing at Johannesburg International Airport on Wednesday afternoon when a fire warning light flashed, an airport spokesperson said.

Jacqui O'Sullivan said it had been a British Airways-Comair flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg.

"A fire warning light appeared in the aircraft so the pilot shut down one of the engines," she said.

"The plane landed safely and was escorted to a safety bay."

No one was injured.

It was not clear what caused the warning light to flash.

Apparently it was outbound to Cape Town from JHB and not inbound as stated. Anyway crew did the job and returned to JHB.
That's it I think!!!!

Heard it was Joberg to stormers territory - not long after dep.

Pilot had a fire warning so they elected to return to FAJS. Nothing serious and no fire - safety first well done chaps. After all isn't that what they are trained to do?

Another non-incident blown out of total proportion by the press. Gosh if the press found out about the total number of stand-bys each day all over the country, they would need a full time paper to report about it (then at leat we wont have to see how pathetic the state of our rugby is )

Talking bout B727s - aaah they are missed !

Goldfish Jack is right. This is a non-event and it is unnecessary to mention incidents of this nature in a public forum. This is what we are all trained for so no kudos for getting it right.

Yes it was a indication malfunction. Obviously you have to follow the QRH which requires you to shut the engine down (in case it was a real fire). Landed back safely-no problems, happens in the simulator all the time!!!!:p
