A transatlantic jet has been forced to return to Shannon Airport after the pilot reported a problem with one of the aircraft's engines.

The Continental Airlines flight was just 20 minutes into its journey to Newark when it was forced to declare an emergency.

The 163 passengers who were on board the aircraft touched down safely just after 12pm this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Shannon Airport said an inspection of the aircraft has been carried out and the engine will have to be replaced.

Oo er! another GE90 gone 'POP' per chance?

According to Co web site, the flight is operated by a 757-200, so I'm assuming they are RR engines on that.

Oh yes could well be a RB211 if it's a 757:O. CO could well do without another GE90 failure after suffering one last week:ugh:
