When you are flying, and I am now talking from what I have heard while flying over Africa, why is it that when you are asked to call at position xyz next, you hear people call up the controlling agency and say....

.....(controlling agency's name), callsign, position....and then once acknowledged, give your position.

as opposed to all the above, but with the actual position.

It's late at night, you feel you should really be in bed, most of the time nobody responds to your initial call anyway, you know they're not going to get your callsign right first time.........

S.C,

Has it been that long since the two of us did the Kalemi thing that you forgot I explained to you why they do that.
It goes like this:
XYZ: ''xyz checking position''
(atc gets up from where he is busy drinking chai and eating bread, spread with Blue Ribbon Margarine, wipes his hand on the flightplan that the last pilot filed with him, wipes his hand over his face to wipe off the crumbs off his chin,( by which time the callsign of the last caller has drifted out he left ear), sits down and presses the transmit button and says,

"calling Lumbumbashi?"

I think you will find that this particular phraseology is the norm in trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific regions because of the procedural ATC and HF radio operations. Get the controllers attention first and then pass the details once your call is acknowledged. In Africa (and I lived there 27 years and flew both mil and civvy) I guess it makes sense to do similar because of the often poor comms, and lack of radar cover i.e. procedural ATC.
