Hi all,
Just a quick question about the General Service Knowledge test at AIB. Can anybody who has recently attended AIB explain what type of questions are on there? Especially on the one geared towards FAA applicants.
By explain, I mean for example 'How many types of ship can accomodate helicopters?' or are they not as in depth as that? Just so I can really start to apply my knowledge in a hopefully constructive way.

I did it a couple of weeks ago. I thought I knew my stuff quite well but there still were a few questions that fuzzed me.
One of them was "what do 849 squadron fly?". Another was "what is IFF?".
Basically, if you know your types, weaps and roles of ships, subs and a/c, you are fine. I believe the test is more used as a grounds for determining what to ask you in the interview.

No matter how much you know about the RN and the FAA, the people on the other side of that table will always know more. Learn everything you can about the Senior Service, but they will keep asking until you don't know the answer to a question. At that point, STOP. Hold your hands up and say 'i'm sorry Sir, i really don't know'. They do not want to see anyone b*llsh*tt*ing or even guessing. For example....What do 849NAS fly? Sorry, i'm not sure, but i know they are involved in AEW.

The advice above is very sound - the board members have seen every rouse and every form of squirming bullsh*t. Just be honest, if you dont know say so. That says a a lot more about someone's character than a lie.
and btw if you dont know what 849 NAS fly you should all be shot, its only the Queen of the Skies! (SK Mk7 ASaC)

Went around a month ago now, different branches get different tests but I know for aircrew (P and O) they don't just want you to know general stuff bout the RN but there were a couple of Q's related to more technical stuff to do with aviation, ie. 'which RN helo has got 3 engines?' or 'what is angle of attack?' etc. Not hugely important because there were very few of these types of Q's and much more to do with aircraft and ships.
