best way to get commercial licence

I need some advise on the best and cheapest way to go about getting my airline pilots licence. I am looking at getting a private licence in NZ and then training in the USA, will my NZ licence be valid there? I have been advised that the USA is the cheapest place to train, is this true? Also what are the steps, Prvate-Commercial-Airline?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
