View Full Version : Flying Club Excess Insurance - Cape Town

I pay an amount of about R500-00 Excess Insurance each and every year to all the flying clubs across South Africa that I fly with (the amount paid annually varies from club to club).

I'm a bit concerned about the rumour that one of the Cape Peninsula based clubs has been digging into the excess insurance cookie jar. If there's a claim, members (even those who have contributed to the Excess Insurance Fund for years) will face having to chip in once the proverbial hat is passed around.

How many of these club excess funds have available written Rules of the Excess Insurance Fund for members to look at (or take home and study)?

I'm worried that I am / other are at risk if I / they hire this particular club's aircraft - as I frequently do - and then some nutter prangs into me. I would probably be liable for some US$8,000-00 excess.

Where the money? Is it still in tact?

The problem with internal funding is that, if the fund gets hit early or often, it can run out and, as you've discovered, the only option then is to pass round a hat.

If the club has used the funds for other purposes (fixing the leaking clubhouse roof), you might have a legitimate beef with the committee. Otherwise, it's a chance you take in order to save money by not buying insurance.

If you're flying at a number of clubs, or using other people's aircraft privately, you're better off buying Excess cover from an insurance company. It may cost a bit more, but it won't run out on you! You can usually pay the premium by monthly debit order, so that also helps.

Just trying to help. On second thoughts, don't buy insurance...just keep your fingers crossed.

As there has been no comment for a couple of days, I would like to state that the club that I belong to (Good Hope Flying Club) has a properly managed excess fund, with written rules. After meeting its primary obligations to members, the funds secondary objective is to eventually help toward the club being self insured on some or all aircraft, as well as to help fund replacement aircraft. There is also a statement on the disposal of the surplus in the fund should it ever be wound up.

Can you please post the Good Hope Flying Club Excess Insurance Rules on this website?

If not, where do I get a copy?

Can you also please forward these rules to ALL other Peninsula clubs as there is one that worries me.

I expected that Good Hope Flying Club would have everything in order as Good Hope has the good fortune of having as a CFI that tough German lady who has been ruling the roost (very efficiently by all accounts) for years - the way a flying club should be. :ok:

I do not have the rules here - best to contact the club directly via phone or the website/google.

The CFI you mention is Dietlind Lempp & she has now left to take a FO post on the Convair. She is still a part time instructor & DE.

The club you are having trouble with, is it at FACT or outside, just curious;)
