My CD/ROM drive has suddenly stopped working. The PC doesn't recognise it, and I can't eject the disc thats in there at the moment. Any clues as to where I might start to look to fix it, before I go and replace it at vast expense??

To get the CD out, stick a pin in the small hole at the front, that should manually eject it.

Once empty try reboot the computer.

If it still doesn't work, come back and ask someone who knows more than I do!

Thanks Joe, I wondered what that hole was for!

Open PC case and check that the power lead and drive cable are fully connected. It is worth removing the conectors and refitting them (cleans the connecting surfaces).

Zlin,

These things are so cheap now it isn't worth your time trying to fix it!

If you do what ZH875 suggests and it still doesn't work then go shopping.

You can buy a CD-Rom for less than £10, a DVD-Rom or CD-RW for £10-15!

Thanks guys for your help. It now seems to work again after I prized out the CD. Mysterious things are computers........??
