i recently did an instrument renewal and the examiner, after the test, just filled in the page in my licence there and then.

this was the first renewal i have done on a jar licence so i was completely surprised when i did not have to send in my licence to caa...is this correct and normal?

yes and yes. Unless your IR is expired by more than 5 years.

Examiner also sends a form to the CAA for their records.

Hi,

Most JAR-FCL states do it this way. There are, however, a couple of exceptions (how boring it would be otherwise :) ) where the national CAA prohibits examiners from entering anything in your licence, and rather insists on having it sent in, for them to do the entries. Then again, some countries will allow their own examiners of making the entries, but not examiners from other JAR-FCL states. Makes life interesting...

Cheers,
