i had the pleasure of travelling around the Mediterranean recently and what caught my eye was a huge blue ship - with an S-76 landing on it!!

Awesome!

Who owns these boats? No doubt people with too much money.

Any feedback from the pilots would be great.

In 2003, the launch of Paul Allen's 127m (416ft) "Octopus" secured its number one position as the world's
largest yacht. Microsoft's "accidental billionaire" Paul Allen - worth US$20 billion according to Forbes, the third richest man in
America and 7th in the world - owns two other monsters yachts such as Tatoosh ranked 3rd in the World in 2003.

Octopus cost Allen over US$200 million and has Permanent crew of 60, including several former Navy Seals.
It has two helicopters, seven boats, a 10 man submarine and a remote controlled vehicle for crawling on the
Ocean floor. The submarine has the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks underwater. On average, owners must spend a minimum of 10 percent of the purchase price every year to keep these
yachts in good working condition and cover crew salaries. Therefore “Octopus” which cost Allen US$200 million
requires a US$20 million annual budget.

(What they left out...)
Mr Allan has two pilots, both earning nearly $20,000 US / year each! When there not flying, the pilots are scrubbing the decks or painting the hull.

Two helipads on the Octopus??

I suppose you don't want to have to walk too far!!

"Excuse me sir but do you want to front or rear helpiad today?"

Looks like some serious money.

Beautiful boat though.

Nearly $20,000!!

Even in the Med, should pilots work for such a pittance: discuss.

With all expenses paid that $20,000 is almost all disposable income if you have an offshore bank and a good accountant!
Can I have a job like that please.

That is an AMAZING ship!

At first I didn't spot the little tiny 76 on the aft helideck!!!

That seems to be certainly how the other half live!!

If any of you fancy a piece of it, check out this website!!

We had Paul Allen down here around St. Maarten around christmas.
The Octopus was anchored off Saba, and he flew in on one of two private 757s. He then used the 76 to fly himself to the boat, while a MD902 was used for the luggage (Front helipad).
Must be nice.

Pic of the 76 leaving Juliana....

Same Paul Allen as financed Rutan's Spaceship 1 I believe, you've got to admire the man's taste in toys.

Why does anyone want to do that?

To escape the radiation after a nuclear war, of course. Didn't you see "On The Beach"?

Wizzard,

Rest assured that these pilots are well paid. It is probably the best paid coporate job in the world.

I met Paul Allen last Tuesday night when he and the Space Ship 1 team received the Collier Trophy in Washington for their marvelous success on the first private space flight. This was an example of the kinds of things I have to do on my job, oh woe is me.....The speeches by Allen, and by Burt Rutan were really great, talking about how we have to get innovation back into aviation - themes that I see here on pprune as well.

Dan Akroyd and his wife, Donna Dixon were at Allen's table (who ya gonna call?)

Here is a picture I took during Rutan's speech, it frames the entire team, with Paul Allen (whose yacht was not parked outside!) on the extreme left. That orange aircraft in the photo is of course Glamorous Glennis:

I just heard an Aussie mate of mine just scored one of these positions.

Wish him all the best!

Just right for clandestine operations then, for those 'former' SEALs ;)

Hi all,

"nearly 20 k a year" - I believe this is just a way to say " Not of your business!"
No doubt there are plenty of pilots who would fly a S-76 for that or even less.
Question is, if you as the owner and/or passenger of that ship would want to trust your life into the hands of pilots like that. Not that they might not be good pilots, but if they are that good, they probably have already a job that pays a "little" better!
So what quality of pilots to you actually have available for that money for that job?
I doubt that a man like Allen will spend all that cash just to start saving on the crew.......!

Blue Skies to the lucky chaps!

PS: Of course there is always the odd guy who has it already all and doesn't need anysalary at all!!:E

Is it a fantasy to believe that "nearly 20 k a year" is a typo? Maybe "nearly 200k a year" sound possible considering the situation.

errr, gents, about the "what was left out" section;
Mr Allan has two pilots, both earning nearly $20,000 US / year each! When there not flying, the pilots are scrubbing the decks or painting the hull.]
was not factual. I added it. It was a tongue in cheek dig at pilot’s wages in comparison to such a grand ship's expenses.
Frankly, I'm a little surprised some of you thought $20k a year was a reasonable wage and I suppose you had no problem with scrubbing the decks either? Only goes to prove my point. Sad ain’t it.

Hi Av8r

They just don't get it do they........????

Must be like me, being the only B206L3 pilot in Timbuktu who gets $18 000/month after expenses.

Cheers mate.

Back to Paul Allen's Octopus, there's a nice photo of it - complete with S-76 aft and Explorer on the bow - in this month's AIN rag (pp68-69) as part of a story on helicopter ops from yachts.
