I would like to know the relevence of the coloured bands painted on WWII bombs; the 4000lb cookie in particular.

I visited East Kirkbys Lancaster this morning and an example of a 4000lb "Cookie" bomb had a red and a turquoise ring around the full circumferance. Anyone able to through any light on this one?

coloured bands are usually an indicator of the type of filling.

if it had red crosses on it it usually meant as far as I remember that it ws explosive fit for use in tropical climes.
white for phosphorus
yellow for torpex
red for RDX
purple for rdx / ????mix
light blue for drill purpose
