Guardian: You've been nicked - by a lamppost

You might have thought it was only in the realms of Doctor Who that people got accosted by wheelie bins and the like. But coming to a road near you, an arresting new piece of street furniture - a camera that takes your picture and bellows at you to behave yourself.

The Flashcam, developed by a company which goes by the suitably space-aged moniker of Q Star, was developed in the United States and is being marketed to UK councils.

The cameras, perched high on lampposts and other vantage points in neighbourhoods where vandalism, theft, drug dealing and prostitution are rife, sense human movement and shout catchy warnings such as: "Stop! If you are engaging in an illegal activity, your photograph will be taken and used to prosecute you. Please leave the area."........

"There are about 52 throughout the UK so far, in crime hotspots in cities like London, Glasgow and Birmingham. They go off with a very intense flash and a loud shout. "They have already caught lots of people - some quite literally with their pants down, engaged with prostitutes. The look of utter amazement on their faces when the camera starts to shout is priceless."....

None in Liverpool I notice.

Unattended cameras! How long would they last, then? :hmm:

So, when can we expect the "juicy" bits to be used for blackmail, or even put on the web?:E

One installed some Infra red cameras in a small business park in Bradford that the ladies of the night were using as a place of work, we watched some very interesting videos, likewise a all night cash machine bank lobby in Newcastle.

Late night, near a toilet block...
"Stop! If you are engaging in an illegal activity, your photograph will be taken and used to prosecute you. Please leave the ...George?...George is that you again?."........

If we thinking of the same bank lobby then:

1. The camera is hardly hidden.

2. Once kissed a former girlfriend in said lobby in the hope that somebody was watching. Can confirm it did involve tongues.;)

Prolly Mr Star, some buggah set fire to same ,one had to replace it at great expence to the bank and profit to oneself.
Had a video of a similar place in Hull, rather unkempt individual enters lobby obiously seeking shelter for the night, sees camera, resents same, exits, returns with half brick clutched in mit, approaches camera and crash!! at that point tape goes blank, needless to say this miscreant was captured by the old bill forthwith and got shelter for the night.

Years ago - drunk forgets PIN at ATM, as he was going somewhere in the morning and needed card he rings up and demands card be returned - gets told next day.

Non electronic camera, so 8x10 glossies of his attempt to liberate card with an axe.

Place of work, some time ago, secure site, cameras all over the place. Aforesaid site seperated from main road by a grassy bank.

Couple on way home from pub decide to (couple, that is) so nip over to blind side of grassy bank - in sight of cameras. After a few minutes security guard wends his way to the scene, 'Oi, what you up to?' and couple leg it, with the female leaving her handbag at the scene.

Gaurd takes handbag back to reception in case woman comes back for it. Next day lunchtime no-one has been so the bag is taken down to the local police station where it is found that the woman has been in to report the loss of her handbag, having been mugged.

Apparently the man and woman were married. Just not to each other. Net result was two divorces and one prosecution for wasting police time. And security made a fortune from flogging copies of the video.

Twenty five years ago I was part of the military machine set up to fight the terrible threat of the commumist states further east. On our thankfully infrequent visits to that part of the world, great emphasis was put on the fact there were cameras on some street corner buildings. We shuddered at the thought and were prepared to fight it to the death.

Then New Labour got elected..... now look at the state of the country.

Mr Torque, town center cameras were around long before T Blair was ejected squarking from his mums womb, Durham City Center had cameras in the mid fifties, one installed ones first town camera (keeping eye on the public for the use of) in 1976

Durham city centre camera was actually in use far earlier than 1976. Local records show that the first one was probably installed in 1908.

It wasn't much use in fighting crime though as in order to take a picture, an operator was required to shout a warning and then everyone had to stand still for three and a half minutes.

Fortunately though the photographs were available within four hours so the invention wasn't wasted, but used instead to help solve the city's crippling horse jam problems.

Am assured that the KSB (nee KGB) archives contain the biggest collection of live action porn in the world, said 'porn' collected from every hotel bedroom in the former USSR. When in Russia do find myself taking a long hard look at the smoke detector in each hotel room.:suspect::ooh:
