Did hear recently that the EK freighter business was to get a lot bigger. Thought EK outsources that.

The rumour going around here in Dubai, is for fifteen of these babies, to confirm the outstanding 340-600 order (8) and to be the launch customer for the A350. There is also talk about 15 777LR, I do not know though what will actualy happen, and no one knows until the Paris airshow. Do not forget though that the initial 777s arrived in 97, and the first 330s in 98, so they will be replacing lots of planes aswell. The first 330 are to be leaving by the end of 2007 for the French...
What is realy important though is not how many airplanes will be coming this way, but who will fly them with the T&Cs they are offering, and under what FTLs and work practices....
Flying new shiny kit is great, but does not put money in the bank, nor does it give us great retirement prospects...

where are EK going to fly with all these A/C is the projected passenger growth that high in that part of the world?

Well, with their abundance of cash and highly discounted unit price, due to bulk ordering, Emirates can buy as many of any type that they like and then go into the leasing business, they don't have to, nor would they want to, fly them all themselves, I think.

They could certainly corner the market in leasing to other Middle Eastern and Muslim country airlines as well as offer very competative rates to anyone else that was interested! The Emirates order book may, in fact, represent the wish list of several airlines, not just EK.

What people around the globe do not realize is that though the UAE is a very rich country, Emirates is not a gov airline and it does not receive money from the FED gov as it is not owned by the Abu Dhabi royal family. Dubai is at the mercy of Abu Dhabi and they do not have the unlimited resources our friends down the street have. Nor does Dubai have the oil people think it has. Dubai has very limited oil, and it is running out quickly, so they do rely on tourism and business. Oil rich Abu Dhabi has its own airline Etihad and does not want to help, nor assist Emirates. The Emirates management have to find a way to finance all these aircraft, and we are also wondering how they are going to do it? As far as selling them to other airlines possible, but I do not believe anyone in the region would buy them as a pride thing on both sides of the business transaction...

But someone still has to BUY them, even if an airline leases them. So, I guess that will be the big lessors in the industry. But how do the lessors finance the acquisition, and why do they feel they can sustain the risk....?

The problem with the likely future A380 fleet looks like it is going to be too dependent on Emirates. If anything were to happen to Emirates, or even if it had to scale back operations in future years due to over-hasty expansion, the world might be awash with used A380s.
