Greetings,

I am hoping to put down a compass rose at a small airfield, can anybody advise if there is a traditional design or specification for an airfield compass rose? (in terms of layout, colours etc)

It would be painted on to concrete, any pictures of existing ones would be a great help,

Thanks

Raven

OK, try looking here (http://www.eoascientific.com/cartography/aaMaps_M3_compass_Z.htm) or here (http://www.gisnet.com/notebook/comprose.html), might give you an idea of where to start.

Good hunting

In the US, it's usually a volunteer effort on the part of the ninety nines (http://www.ninety-nines.org/airmark.html)

Here's one in Michigan

Here's another in Colorado

Its a wonderful piece of art, I'd be scared to to taxi over it for fear of scuffing it. But, from the air, it doesn't exactly tell you which way is up. I think the letters need to be a tad bigger.

I've seen a picture of a compass rose crop mark which I think was a circle with a north-pointing line radiating from it. I'll have a look this evening.

Good point, though hopefully the sun's out so North should be pretty obvious. I think they're used more for swinging a compass though as opposed to inflight navigation.

If used one for compass swinging and it worked just fine, no scuff marks. In fact, I think the paint will fade before scuffing becomes a problem - certainly in Texas.

And don't forget magnetic variation!
