Why is recruitment for the great majority of units so restrictive, usually a 50 mile radius, If one lives in say Tunbridge Wells, one is only 40 miles (ATCF) from Northolt but driving time!!! If one lives in say Leicester, one is only about 1.15 hour from Northolt but is 90 odd miles away.
Seems a bit weird to me.

Previously you could join but the travel was only paid for 50 miles unless a special case could be made.
Things may have changed as my info is a bit out of date

I think it depends on which Unit you join. I live over 60 miles from mine and they have no issues paying the travel and I'm not only one....

When I was "in" there was a 50 mile restriction in the early days (I'm talking late 80's) that could be over-riden on an individual approval basis (it was for me). Later, this restriction seemed to go away completely, as folk were being recruited from all over the place.

Thanks for that chaps.
The refund of travel is not an issue for me. was not even aware this was made! Hope it is not cost that is a factor in not geting an application form!

Members of 612 Sqn RAuxAF the Air Transportable Surgical Sqn based at RAF Leuchars came from as far afield as Guernsey and Belfast - they were specialists of course but I can't see any reason for an arbitrary travel limit.
