View Full Version : Flying Training to End at Luton?

Anybody able to throw any light on a rumour that the single remaining flying training school based at Luton (Eagle Flight) is likely to move out after April this year because the airport's operators have refused to permit them to continue at Luton without using a handling agent, as is required by Luton's Conditions of Use?

The cost of using Harrods or Signature would be prohibitively expensive and not something that could be easily passed on to Eagle's customers.

If true, it seems a shame but perhaps inevitable as Luton gets busier and busier.

And where might Eagle Flight relocate to?

Didn’t they move their aircraft to RAF Henlow sometime ago? If not where do they park the aircraft at Luton now that the grass parking area is being converted into an airside coach park? The only light aircraft I know of that live at Luton belong to Britannia Airways Flying Club, which reside inside the Britannia hangar.

The end of an era if its true. I've fond memories of starting my PPL at LTN in one of the old C152's, in the days when there were more light a/c movements than heavies. Even in pre-EZY days, there were plenty of oppurtunities to practice holding on final while a 757 or bizjet slid past on the ILS. My last flight into LTN flying a light aircraft was a couple of years back, in one of Eagle's Piper Archers, on a night ILS on R08.

Searching even further back in memory's dusty archives, I can recall the days when the Flying Club operated their C150's from the grass runway (was it R22 or 23?), slotting in between the occasional Autair Ambassador or Euravia Connie on R26.

Happy days!

18/36 and 06/24, oh fond memories! Don't get Mr 1 BRAVO started or the Hungarian Ref!

How do Thomson flying Club overcome the need for a handling agent?

So no more 'Hawk Aero'?

Anyone been to see the new Lion enclosure...simply awesome! Busterette got so excited being 3 inches away from one of the females. At last Lions to match the chalk one looking north!

Runway 18/36 2,700ft X 150ft. I used to own a house on the airport side of FineFare (now ADSA) on the final approach to runway 18. On a couple of occasions a Twin Otter rattled the roof tiles. Ahh those were the days!

How about a Be99 at night with no wheels LTNman on 18?

Anyway we digress! The inevitable has happened, light aviation makes way for commercialism?

Would be a shame if Eagle were forced out of Luton. My first (and only!) four flying lessons were out of LTN in their Warriors, and it was always great fun.
I don't suppose Harrods or Signature are interested in helping out, not enough money in it for them, I guess... :(

Think Eagle still have an office in hangar 129 but thats about it.

Who remembers airlines like National Airways, Hubbardair and Nightflight who were all small aircraft airlines that were based at Luton flying Titans, Partenavia, Navajos and King Air’s or even Air Foyle with their Aztec. Seem to remember them having an Optica aerial observation aircraft at one time.

Eagle Flights aircraft (a Pa28 & a Tb10) are tucked in the corner of the cargo apron or occasionally parked near the Police whirly
