Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but what was the script with all the delays at Heathrow due to high winds this week? Is this because aircraft need greater separation in bad weather or something? Approach and take off didn't seem to be particulary bad in my BA 757-200. Maybe one for an ATC person.

For inbound aircraft, strong winds can affect that actual landing rate per hour. Where on an average day the landing rate can sit around the 42ish mark (or better), given a strong head wind the actual can fall down to the 36 mark. And depending upon what the flow rate is, it can mean extra aircraft in the system, thus causing holding delays.
