Saw this article (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,12585633-1248,00.html) regarding my hometown of Brisbane.

What the hell is going on over there? Anybody?

The inner-city venues could have to close at 3am instead of 5am in a bid to deter drunkenness and reduce the growing number of brawls on Brisbane streets Oh well that should take care of it.

except for twelve months it'll be just a lockout at 3am with operation continuing till 5am - wtf?

Just read your article, it's a sad inditement on society when shit like this happens.
I thought it was just the young arseholes who binge drink in the Uk. We have had documentaries on Brit TV about Bristol, Nottingham and other UK cities that have shown this sort of behaviour.
I am not a small guy and after playing serious rugby for many years I can handle myself pretty well.--- However I think twice about going downtown in Coventry at night and worry myself sick if my daughter say's she want's to go downtown with friends.
I always insist on dropping them off and picking them up,--- and I have seen with my own eyes the girls are as bad as the boys!!

Bloody Shame
:{

As much as I hate to fall intot he "back in my day", those who hail from that part of the world will know the Queen Street Mall and surrounding area used to be a fairly safe place to go out, even at night. Sure, you would get the occasional aggro kick off (down towards the Exchange/Victory and maybe Caxton Street), but this just sounds bloody outrageous behaviour.

What's the story?

What's the story?
Alcohol and its partner: commercialism.

Jerricho,

Yes, there has been a spat of bashings in Brissie. Usually very early in the morning, and often at cab ranks. The usual cause, alcohol and the small minded young yobos that can't handle it.

Queen St. Mall is still safe til about 2-3am. Then the drunken dickheads get out and start doing stupid things. But Brissie now has a population of about 1.5 million, so if the percentage of idiots of any city is about 10%, then our population of idiots is increasing every year.

When you were a younger, more single fella, there probably weren't as many idiots about.

and often at cab ranks

That doesn't surprise me that much. Ask Plazbot about the time somebody tried to pinch a taxi from us. the words "Get stuffed before I execute you where you stand" were used :E

Allegedly,in the UK,, after midnight more violence occurs at cab ranks than anywhere else. When I was a lad you walked home even if it took hours, mind you it was generally a safe thing to do in the olden days....
