STANSTED Airport closed its runway last night after a man escaped while being deported.
He boarded a Ryanair flight to Milan but got off the plane at the back before take-off.
Police and airport security launched a full search. A helicopter was called in but the man was still missing last night.
An Stansted source said: "The guy just ran off the back of the plane and kept running. He disappeared without a trace."
The runway was closed for an hour from about 7pm. Several outbound flights were cancelled and inbound planes were diverted to Luton.
Last night Essex police said: "An immigration refusee ran off a plane.
"We are now searching for him in the surrounding countryside."
The airport said an investigation had begun.
