I saw a P47 on the ramp at TKI once and on the left hand side, behind the cockpit, there looked like there was a door big enough to have a secret room behind it.

What is that? Just a little cargo space? Battery sorage area like the Spit? Could you ride in it?

I think that you must be wrong. I have been round and in a P47 several times and I have never seen a door in the side. I think that you mus have seen a Skyraider. (http://www.btinternet.com/~duxford.legends/pages/SKY.html)

Where's TKI?

There is a Wildcat in the US that has a small compartment in the rear fuselage which will fit two persons. Door is on the righthand side though! Never heard of a P-47 with that capability.

Oh the shame :( :{

Do I have to change my ID now?

I guess it must've been a Skyraider, though I could've swore it was a jug.

TKI is McKinney Texas, jut north of Dallas.

So is it just a storge compartment?

Onan,

Of a sort - storage for people...

While waiting for a Skyraider guru to give the exact answer, IIRC, the AD-3 version of Skyraider was the first to have the compartment (15 AD-3N being built), followed by the AD-4N (the 'N' standing for night attack). The compartment housed an ECM operator and radar plotter (again, IIRC from Peter C Smith's book on the Skyraider). If you go here (http://www.abledogs.com/gallery/Images/Spadsm.jpg), you should see the door in all its glory...
(I think I am right in saying that the markings on this particular aircraft, a warbird, are not correct for the AD-4N, but I could very well be wrong).

Theres always a Skyraider flying at Duxford shows. It is HUGE. I would have thought that you could carry your own ground crew in it.:}

If its the 'door' in the upper pic (of the razorback P47), thats the Tubocharger exit point, .....gets anorak.......closes stage door left..... :hmm: ps theres another on the other side at exactly the same point as a mirror image,...... must get out more......
