It would have to work better than this.

lemon and white elephant (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,12373782%255E601,00.html)

Tin has been in the shipping business for years
Before this project started tin observed the cost of shipping a 20 foot container from Singapore to Darwin was exactly twice that to any southern port.
It is still the same.
And the freight forwarding cost to Adelaide by rail is a the same cost again.
What genius figured out this could be viable?
Er...someone wanting a vote ? :hmm:

Err...... Not defending anyone but isn't there a two tier system in place re charges? Trying to compete I believe. And Tinpis I suspect that I agree with you that one would need a qualification from a recognised University to stuff this up.

Then again knowing the history, going back to the Vesty deals, the confidence is just not there.

Yes because

International trade is 16,000 tonnes, less than 3per cent of business. Freight rates for cargo coming from Southeast Asia are now set at up to half the cost of domestic rates.

Subsidised by whom?

The decision to quit the line -- 13 months after it opened for business, propped up by more than $1billion in federal and state government subsidies --

Oh ho... :hmm:

Gimmee a billion $ and an old 747.

Dunno what to export from Darwin tho......hmmmm....lawyers?

Tinpis you are being a small business person again. Now stop that! Repeat after me :The railway from Alice to Darwin is Good:

Essential infrastructure I call it and about time too.

I also have some thoughts on the other one (Melb-Dn via central QLD).

Be patient our kids will reap the benefits.

Oh I hope so.

One wonders sometimes about the reluctance of Territorians to assume statehood.

Why do we need an NT government when EVERYTHING can be shot down from Canberra?

Waste of bloody money IMHO.

Ok back to me second bottle of WA savvy blanc

that rail line should be connected to the coal fields in western QLD and NSW! coal direct to darwin, then shipped to asia! have you seen the number of ships waiting weeks and even months to load coal from the 1 QLD coal port??

tinpis
23rd Apr 2005, 22:29
That would only mean the ships would wait off Darwin
:hmm:
