a Hercules landing on a Aircraft carrier!!! http://www.theaviationzone.com/images/hercules/kc130/bin-1/kc130009.jpg

When one reviews the encyclopedic range of accomplishments by the C-130 Hercules and its valiant aircrews over the years, surely one of the most astounding took place in October of 1963 when the U.S. Navy successfully landed a Marine Corps KC-130 on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Yep. Multiple landings (and departures of course!) using USS Forrestal. Aim was to see if the new C-130 could be used to resupply the fleet at sea.

Even the Spams determined that although possible, it wasn't sensible! There was 6ft of clearance between the wing and the carrier's superstructure if the pilot landed bang on his specially painted centreline. There's a video out on the web somewhere as well.

The Spams also launched a U-2 off a carrier!

Scene: an MoD bunker somewhere, clock ticking softly in the background ...

"By gad, I've got it ..."
<picks up phone>
"Sir, Sir we could save billions ... cancel JSF, we put the J's on the carriers!"
<silence>
"What's that sir? Ski-ramp ... what ski-ramp?"

But seriously, if it works for B-25's ... it'll work for C-130's !

Nice shot, TT... shame the rear part of the fuselage appears to be below deck! Won't stop me using it to convince civvie friends that the military can do ANYTHING...! :E

Teeteringhead, the Shack didn't roll tho.

Crew got hold of Ark's CCA freqs and called up for an approach. Navy got all worried that they really planned to try and land and I believe started to clear the flight deck the easy way with the big yellow brooms.

Don't know if they actually ditched any aircraft over the side.

Out in the Far East I believe about 63-64.

There is NOTHING new in aviation. Just old stories and old mistakes just waiting for the young to discover them for themselves.

The B25 launch was of course well documented so trying it with a Herc on a bigger carrier was not the blind leap in to the dark that it might have seemed.

The less well documented tales are out there just waiting for a new 'idiot' to do it again.

Like almost landing the mail in the hangar while the Gemini that had been launched to recover the mail drop watched from about 200 yards off. They got the mail from the ship and didn't need to Gemini!

Been there done it in a E3D on COMPTUEX, lined up did an approach called the Ball and overshot to Port. Excitable Yank on Approach came on Freq and said "Confirm you WILL be overshooting on this approach Sir" Banter down the back was something to hear & certainly not PC.

Not a story, True!

The ac got to 60 flap with the flag man on deck giving directions

The crew then declared a change of intention - "Low fly past for a Brownie serial" - "Approved"

This stopped the capt getting in the sh*te!

Imagine trying that today ?

We have old pilots and bold pilots - but not many old, bold pilots !
