The Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators has been helping people to become professional pilots for a very long time.
It was established in 1929 by a small group of commercial pilots, and has grown into a highly respected aviation body, run by experienced professional pilots - civil and military.
The Guild's objectives are:
To establish and maintain the highest standards of air safety through the promotion of good airmanship among pilots and navigators.
To maintain a liaison with all Authorities connected with licensing, training and legislation affecting pilot or navigator whether private, professional, civil or military.
To constitute a body of experienced airmen available for advice and consultation and to facilitate the exchange of information.
To strive to enhance the status of air pilots and air navigators.
To assist air pilots and air navigators in need through the Benevolent Fund.

Scholarships:

Full Private Pilot Licence (PPL) courses
Flying Instructor (FI(R)Aeroplanes) Rating course
Flying Instructor (FI(R)Helicopters) Rating course
J N Somers ATPL Scholarship
(Full frozen ATPL course at a CAA approved school, awarded each year. Closing date August, training to commence early the following year.)
Jet Orientation Course Scholarships

The aim of the Scholarships programme is to assist the successful individual, who might otherwise not have the necessary resources, to achieve their Licence or Rating. The costs refundable by the Scholarships are restricted to direct training and examination costs. The costs of obtaining the required Medical Certificate, and any associated travel, subsistence, and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the Scholarship winners.

The Guild will normally expect training to be completed within six months of the award being made.
Candidates who are short listed for the PPL and FI(R) Rating Scholarships are required to attend at their own expense for an interview commencing mid-May at the London offices of The Guild. The interview is preceded by a short written examination to assess numeracy, literacy and mental agility.

Scholarship criteria include:
• ability to demonstrate a serious ambition and ability to pursue an aviation based career
• availability to undertake and seriously commit to completion of training awarded during summer 2005
• educational achievements, demonstrable knowledge and / or experience in science, mathematics or other aviation related subjects
• ability to satisfy the relevant CAA medical standard to enable grant of the appropriate licence and any relevant CAA pre course entry requirements
• age at least 17 years at the commencement of training on 1 July 2005.
Except for the J N Somers ATPL Scholarship, applications must be made by 15 April 2005 on the GAPAN Scholarship Application form available from the GAPAN Website: Guild of Air Pilots (www.gapan.org)

Alternatively, write saying which Scholarship you wish to be considered for [PPL, FI R, or FI R(H)] enclosing a stamped addressed A4 size envelope to:
The Scholarships Secretary,
Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators,
Cobham House, 9 Warwick Court,
Gray’s Inn, London, WC1R 5DJ

Interviews will be held in London, starting mid May.

Not surprisingly, there's a lot of competition for the annual scholarships but, if you don't try, you don't get.

Good Luck! :ok:
