27 Sqn 90th Anniversary

27 Sqn will be celebrating their 90th anniversary this year and to mark the event there will be a Families Day and Formal Dinner at RAF Odiham on 24th August.

The Families Day will incorporate a flying/static display, stalls, food and drink and some families flying. Following a sunset ceremony and flypast, there will be a formal dinner in 27 Sqn's hangar for service and former members only.

We would be delighted to hear from former members and those interested in attending and any photographs/memorabilia you would like to display on the day.

A while back , I heard that the Vulcan was going to be air testing around this time and hoping to make an appearance at 27 Sqn's 90th.

Will post details of aircraft participating when they've been finalised. We're hoping to have as many of 27's former types as possible....a Vulcan would be an awesome sight.

Can't believe it, just signed up (screaming & kicking) to a holiday in France! Missed the Falklands doo as well - arghh!

Ive still got some undeveloped film of the parade we had in the hangar on the occasion of the 240 OCU/27(R) re numbering event. I will try and dig them out and send them down. Got some other phots/slides as well.

Oh, by the way I was one of 27's own hookers.

Any Tornado types out there know anything about missing 27 Sqn memorabilia/pictures that has been missing since we were disbanded in the 90s? Rumour has it they were spread amongst the other Tornado Sqns and probably 617 Sqn. Can anybody shed any light to its whereabouts?

I think your best bet for pics and stuff should be No.12 Sqn at Lossie, as all that actually happened in '93 was (more or less) a re-badging exercise of the then 27 Sqn into 12.

For those waiting to hear if the mighty Vulcan will be making an appearance, we've had no luck. Apparently it won't be ready until at least next year....maybe for the 100th?!

For those that have been in touch about the evening function, I can confirm that it will be 'stag'. Nevertheless, friends and families are more than welcome to help us celebrate during the day at 27 Sqn where there will be plenty to keep them entertained.

Yes...but nothing too extravagant I'm afraid- 18 Sqn are doing the same and have also had some lovely badges made up.;)

Two 27 Sqn Chinooks will be painted in approx 4 weeks time to commemorate the anniversary . Each will display the 'raging bull' elephant on the nose, a Sqn crest on each electrical compartment and the Sqn tac logo on the aft pylon...happy snapping.

Thanks to all of you that have responded so far- we're so pleased with how many former members will be joining us on the day. For those that haven't been in touch yet you have only a short while before we close the guest list-our hangar is only so big!

Cabs with anniversary paint scheme hit the streets tomorrow...won't be at Waddington unfortunately as they will be in Scotland but hopefully they'll be on static display at RIAT.

Thanks for all those that came along to our do on Wednesday. We thought it was a great day despite the torrential rain. We're just sorry none of the displays (bar the chinook) could get through and do their thing. However, it was nice to have so many former members back and we hope we showed you a little of what we do now.
