View Full Version : Another slip... Lion PK-LMJ at WAAA

2 days ago, Lion had another incident in Ujung Pandang/Makassar (WAAA).

Aircraft overran runway after conducting an ILS approach with a tailwind. Normal touchdown, but after 80kts, aircraft did not slow down on the last 600m of the runway.

Is this because of the slippery runway? (80kts for 600m runway sufficient for the MD80?)

This is already the 2nd reported overrun by Lion in 2005. A couple of week back there was another report of a similar incident in Padang (WIMG).

There are now rumours that PK-LMJ could end up as a write off which if it is, would make it the 2nd write off in <3 months...

Would an insurance company write a statement as follows:
Previously 6 overruns/excursions at UPG all at the same end/place on the runway(There were 2 in December but one was an F16 so did not count in the 6).
Previous considerations are as follows.
Always a tail wind on this runway when weather is low cloud and rain.
Cannot approach with low cloud base from other end.
Anemometer possibly not recording correct windspeed due to location.
Supposed to have been moved. Don't know if it was? Consequently aircraft tail wind at touch down zone can be higher than reported.
Heavy rubber deposits on touch down zone at opposite end of runway from which the landing is made during an ILS. Aircraft normally goes off the runway in this area but breaking action is not good even if the crew can keep the aircraft in a straight line.
Standing water?
Only good point is many of the crew know these hazards exist at UPG.
