DNA tests will be needed to identify a man killed in a helicopter crash in south-western NSW today.

The man, believed to be in his 50s and from central Victoria, was killed when the two-seater helicopter crashed in a field and burst into flames.

Police said he was incinerated in the crash, which happened on Windouran station, 10 kilometres east of the small town of Moulamein, shortly after 8am (AEDT).

The man's body had been recovered and taken to Deniliquin, where he would be formally identified tomorrow using DNA testing, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

A post-mortem examination will also be carried out.

The man, who was the sole occupant in the Rotorway Executive helicopter, had left Hay in NSW about 8am (AEDT) bound for Minyip in central Victoria, police said.

The Air Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the crash. source (http://http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Pilot-killed-in-NSW-chopper-crash/2005/01/31/1107020305378.html?oneclick=true)

Air safety specialists are investigating a fatal helicopter crash near Deniliquin in southern New South Wales.

The chopper came down on a farm between Moulamein and Wanganella and burst into flames, with the pilot trapped inside.

Inspector Fred Christian from Deniliquin Police says farm workers were first on the scene.

"About 8:00am [AEDT] this morning police received a report of an aircraft accident on an isolated property north west of Deni (sic)," he said.

"The accident was discovered by property workers who investigated smoke coming from an area on that property."

Deniliquin Police have been unable to confirm whether more than one person was in the helicopter.

Police say they are still investigating why the western Victorian pilot of a homemade helicopter crashed yesterday near Moulamein in southern NSW.

The Wimmera man was incinerated after the helicopter crashed and caught fire on a farm between Moulamein and Wanganella.

Deniliquin police are preparing a report for the coroner.

Alan Stray from the Air Transport Safety Bureau says sporting aviation bodies will investigate the fatality because it involved a homemade chopper.

"The information I have [about the make] is RotorWay - I don't have any further information on that - but I've been informed that it was a home-built type in the experimental category," he said.
