Fastest growth among Europe’s top ten airports:
Passenger volume at Munich Airport soars to new record of 26.8 million
With more than 26.8 million passengers in the year just ended – a gain
of 2.6 million on the previous year – Munich Airport posted the strongest
growth in passenger volume in its history. Commenting on the rapid
expansion of the total passenger volume – nearly 11 percent as
compared with the prior year – Dr. Michael Kerkloh, Munich Airport’s
CEO, stated that Munich has further solidified its competitive position
among the major hubs: “This sharp rise in growth makes Munich the
“European champion” among the 10 busiest airports. No other airport in
this "airports champions league" reported double-digit growth in
passenger figures for the past year.”
Munich also set a new record for take-offs and landings in 2004. The
370,000 commercial aircraft movements marked an 8 percent increase
as compared with the previous year. Also benefiting from the massive
growth in traffic was the airfreight segment, which also reached a new
record level with a 26 percent increase. For the first time, the airfreight
handled at Munich Airport, including trucked freight, exceeded 300,000
metric tonnes.
The strong upward trend in traffic figures also boosted the company’s
total revenues. Preliminary figures show an increase in total revenues in
2004 to approximately 654 million Euros. Due to the substantial
investments and additional operating costs for Terminal 2, which opened
in June 2003, the airport expects to report a loss of 55 million Euros.
However, this is less than the loss anticipated in the budget for 2004.
Contributing to this better-than-expected result, alongside the increased
revenues from aviation, were the measures undertaken as part of the "MPower
– Fit for the Future" project, which is intended to realign the
airport’s strategy and improve its results.
The key growth driver in the past year was the continued expansion of
hub traffic at Munich Airport. The percentage of connecting passengers
has now increased from 31 to 33 percent. This rise is mainly due to the
massive expansion of intercontinental traffic. The number of long-haul
flights in Munich increased nearly 30 percent in 2004, and the passenger
total on these routes actually jumped by more than 40 percent. Massive
gains (27 percent) were also recorded in traffic to eastern Europe and the
CIS countries. This traffic segment accounted for a total of 1.9 million
passengers.
Terminal 2, which handles passengers flying with Lufthansa and its
partner airlines, posted a 12.4 percent gain in total passengers, and thus
experienced stronger growth than the airport as a whole. With an
8 percent increase as compared with the previous year, the passenger
volume in Terminal 1 also made a decisive contribution to the impressive
traffic results of the past operating year. Segments accounting for aboveaverage
growth in Terminal 1 included the low-cost carriers. The
proportion of passengers in Terminal 1 flying with low-cost airlines is
already approaching the 30 percent mark.
By redesigning the large, open-concept waiting zones in the C and D
departure areas in late 2004, the airport again significantly enhanced the
quality of service in Terminal 1. Catering and retail premises were
expanded and placed at attractive locations easily seen – and frequented
– by passengers. Similar renovations in the A and B departure areas are
slated for completion this year.
The 2004 traffic statistics include a number of new records: For
example, the airport shattered the single-day “sound barrier” of 100,000
passengers three times. The peak figure of 105,040 passengers was
recorded on Friday, September 24th. For the first time, the average
number of take-offs and landings per day at Munich Airport topped
1,000. The new single-day record for aircraft movements is now 1,232.
Munich Airport also made big gains in the number of destinations served,
with 14 more cities on the timetable than a year earlier. 110 airlines now
offer regular connections from the Bavarian capital to 237 cities in 65
countries. More and more wide body jets are now taking off from
Munich Airport. In 2004 there was a 30 percent rise in the number of
these large aircraft operating in Munich.
Flanking this increase in the size of the aircraft was a further rise in the
average load factor. It improved by 1.8 percentage points to nearly
70 percent, the highest value recorded since the airport opened.
“Munich Airport wrote a new chapter in its successful history in 2004,
with massive gains in all key traffic segments,” concluded CEO Kerkloh
at the airport’s annual press conference today. With these gains, he
added, the airport has taken great strides toward its goal of making itself
"Europe's most attractive and efficient hub airport by 2010."
