Spanish low cost long haul carrier Air Madrid is to cancel its flights to Brazil - it started flying to Rio last June

Apparently the Brazilian authorities have not allowed Air Madrid to sell more than 20 seats per flight in Brazil and the carrier would need full access to the market to ensure profitability

Pardon the dumb question, but what is the reason that Brazilian authorities would limit the number of revenue seats? Obviously they donīt want the airline to serve, but beyond that what is the reason that they would give.

If I understood the last paragraph of the linked article correctly, since Air Madrid is not included in the bilateral agreement with Spain, concerning scheduled carriers, it is treated as a charter airline in Brasil. The limitations are associated with this type of operation.

I would think the DAC would be trying to protect Varig who has been having a tough time since 9/11 and also during the regional economic recession

The bilateral agreement includes Iberia and Varig - can anyone clarify if VASP and Spanair ( neither have avtive routes at the moment) are also included?

Charter companies are additional as they increase tourism numbers but they are resRticted to what they can sell in Brazil
