AVI -> DVD Convert

I have a 931MB .avi in XviD format (if that means anything) which I want to put onto DVD.

After reading various tutorials and articles, i'm at a loose end on how to do it! I now have a few random programs (DVD Santa, DVD Shrink etc etc) which I have picked up in the course of these tutorials but they're getting me nowhere.

Can anyone suggest how I go about getting this file onto the standard 4.7GB disc?

Ah, didnt realise that avi's went straight on DVD!

The AVI will burn onto a DVD, but will only be playable in a computer - not on a standalone DVD player.

To burn in a compliant format for most DVD players the AVI needs to be converted into an MPEG file which then needs to be authored into the appropriate files and directories.

The software I use is TMPGEnc (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tp.html) for the conversion and TMPGEnc DVD Author (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tda.html) to create the actual DVD - this will allow you to create menus and chapters etc.

Other tools are available, but I find these fairly straightforward

The DVD player may not be able to play an avi or xvid file though.

DVDSanta should convert .avi files to dvd format but you cannot edit chapters into the dvd, when its completed it normaly opens or asks if you want to open your dvd burner
Tmpg2.5 will also convert but i find it a little slow, so i use a program called main concept encoder which will convert most to dvd format mpeg files in around 90 mins, you then need tmpg dvd author to convert to vob files and insert chapters which will take roughly 15 to 20 mins

After using TMPGEnc, i now have an mpeg with no sound. Will I have sound after i've burnt it to DVD and play it?

no don't burn it .
did you check the system(video+audio ) box as tmpg will default to ES(video only)

if you have dvdsanta as above open it and click on video files (.avi,wmv ) to DVD Then add media in window that opens select your media file then in lower corner select ntsc or pal if uk pal then medium resolution and select full screen or 16:9 .
In advanced settings select 4.7gb dvd
then ok on return to other screen click create dvd.
on completion it normally asks if you want to open your burner and burn the disc
