German Helicopter Crash Kills Two Police Officers (Update1)
Jan. 17 (Bloomberg)

-- A German police helicopter crashed, killing two police officers and injuring three in a forest in the state of Saxony today, police said.

The helicopter with five people on board crashed near the city of Thalheim in the Ore Mountains at 11:15 a.m. and caught fire, Isolde Schimak, spokeswoman for the Chemnitz and Ore Mountains police, said in a telephone interview.

The helicopter had been on a mission to find a missing 24- year-old woman, Schimak said. Among the dead was the pilot. The wounded officers, one of them a woman, were taken to a hospital, she said, without giving details of their injuries.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

Had vision of it here on the box in Berlin:(

Not much left there was a bit (but only a bit) of forward speed at impact as the wreckage is spread linearly. Totally burnt out so much so only the dog house remained in Polizei green with the exhaust stacks. Appeared to have intake deflectors, type undiscernible. :ugh:

Dont know what they have down there. It was resting among high trees but the camera angle my have been deceptive as to if it was on the edge of a clearing or in a forrest. Pretty ugly all up
:( :(

For who doesn´t know: a twin Turbine 4 blade MTOW 6400 kg Helicopter manufactured in Poland.

Unfortunately Pilot (35y.) and Flight Technician(33y) died in Crash.

It looks as though it came down in a wooded area which reminds me that I once read an article about emergency landings in trees/jungle etc. that said that Vietnam pilots often tried to "tail slide " in if possible but other theories say flat and slow as if ditching on water...any experience or other theories out there?

Condolences to the the family of the crew and pax alike

Pick the lowest, softest looking place....use up all..all of the rotor RPM as you go in.....make like a great big lawn mower. Zero groundspeed....try to hit the ground from the lowest height possible. It is not the trees that hurt you....but rather the fall to the ground....try not to land on a stump in logged areas....although once you hit the trees all bets are off.

The Golden Rule is....don't try to stretch your glide to a place...fail to make it....and have no Rotor RPM at the bottom.....bad deal. Far better you accept a tree landing but get there at Max RPM and under full control then hope for the best.
