Anyone got any recommendations on this front?
Xdrive (http://www.freedrive.com/) sounds interesting; what about UK based equivalents?

Sonds good, however, I prefer to keep my data where I know wher it is and who has access to it.

Stick to a portable hard drive - no connection to the internet required to get the data back

Dunno how much space you need but I keep slinging usefull bits of info, copies of email, documents etc. in the direction of my Gmail account.
