Hijack this log

I have a strance problem with a PC running Windows 98 on the wireless network:
The PC used to connect through the Netgear DG834G router and access the internet OK but recently it cannot connect using that method just giving page not found messages. I have temporarily taken down the WEP encryption and zone alarm for this PC but it still does not find internet pages. It can however see and be seen with other computers on this network. I have tried both internet explorer and Mozilla browsers both give the same problem. This PC does however happliy connect to the internet and retrieve pages using a vodaphone connect card.
I am begining to wonder if something maybe the vodaphone card is hijacking the browsers preventing access by means other than the vodaphone card. The only other thing i can think of is that there is a problem with the wireless card though I am surprised it is only preventing internet access.

I have run hijack this and have enclosed a copy of the log incase an expert can see any problem.

If the worst comes to the worst I will completly wipe and rebuild this pc though this is a last resort.

Looks like the remnants of a dialler. Have you run Adaware and Spybot. It could be that there is still enough of the dialler installed to screw up your connection. Adaware should get rid of it, so fix the above line in HJT, and run Adaware, following these instructions.

Please download AdAware SE from here (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/).

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
· Automatically save log-file
· Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
· Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
· Scan Within Archives
· Scan Active Processes
· Scan Registry
· Deep Scan Registry
· Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
· Scan my Hosts file

· Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
· All of your hard drives | Proceed

3. Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
· Include additional process information
· Include additional file information
· Include environment information

4. Click the Tweak button and select:
· Under the Scanning Engine:
· Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
· Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
· Under the Cleaning Engine:
· Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

5. Click on Proceed to save the settings.

6. Click Start and on the next screen choose:
· Use Custom Scanning Options

7. Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Next, please reboot again and download Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 from here (http://security.kolla.de): if you haven't already got the program.

Click on Updates | Download Updates, and follow the prompts.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, and click Check for Problems. Once the scan is complete, have SpyBot remove all it finds marked in RED.

Next, please reboot, update HJT to the latest version (1.99.0), by clicking on Config | Misc. Tools | Update and post a new log for a final once over.

I did run both SpyBot and Adaware before running HJT and they both reported nothing, the definition files are out of date though but as I cannot get an internet connection via the network I have not been able to update the files. The other PC (desktop) that connects wirelessly has no problem in getting internet access. The main cabled PC is OK as well, it is only the laptop that is having problems still. My husband whose laptop it is assures me he has not been to any porn sites and I can find no evidence of porn on the PC.

I wonder if there is any mileage in looking at this as a network problem? I'm thinking particularly of possible clashes to do with the Vodafone card.
One possibility that occurs to me is that Win98 has somehow got confused with its connection configurations. Are you able to login to the DG834G so as to access its configuration? If so, I'll be asking you to post some details of this, and of the Windows network configuration for comparison.

PS I'm sure it wouldn't have to be porn sites for malicious software to be involved, it turns up in lots of places...

Hi Helen. The above quote is correct. My mate at work recently went to a screensaver web site to download a free 'Waterfall' saver and he picked up something nasty from that site.

It could come from anywhere if it is a malicious bit of code that is causing the problem. Hope it sorts itself out for you soon. :)

I can access the router, infact I am the only person who can since the password is not written down and is only known to me.
I did take all the security down that I put in place to make doubly sure it is not the router the only thing I did not take down was the AVG on the laptop. From a personal point of view it is not the end of the world if the laptop cant access the internet via the network but it is frustrating from a techinical point of view, I like finding out why things dont work and get them working / offer suggestions to people who can get it working. It is the software tester in me. I may not be arround much over the next few days as it is back to work next week.

OK, here's what I would like you to do, if you don't mind.

1a. On the affected PC, open a command processor window.
1b. Type IPCONFIG /ALL >ipconfig.txt. Copy ipconfig.txt to whichever machine you'll be using for Internet access (not via the Vodafone card, but through the DG834G).
1d. Open the ipconfig.txt file on the Internet machine with Notepad, and copy and paste the contents into your message.

2a. From your browser, connect to 192.168.0.1 (the DG834G). Login using the administrator ID and password.
2b. In the left column, select "Backup Settings".
2c. Select the "Backup" button. Save the resulting netgear.cfg file in an appropriate location on your PC.
2d. Open the netgear.cfg file with MS Word. Accept the default of "Windows encoding".
2e. Delete the whole "Basic Settings" section (item nos. beginning with 2) - we don't need to know these settings, and it would be better if others didn't know them either.
2f. Delete also any lines containing the word "Password".
2g. Copy & Paste the remainder of the configuration file into your message.

It may be possible to see some inconsistency between the two. Apologies in advance if it turns out to be a waste of your time.
