Job advice needed!

Hi all!

Bit of a sad question to ask, but i really need an answer before i commit to spending cash on my ATPL.

I am currently a PPL holder who is very keen to start my ATPL training, but with one MAJOR problem! Due to a incident in my younger years I am carrying the burden of a criminal record, a conviction for assault with provocation! While the conviction will be classed as spent in 4 years i hoped someone may be able to tell me whether any airline would hire me with such a conviction whether spent or not!

Any advice would be great.

There's some info on the CTC website on obtaining an airside pass (you must be able to get one of these to work for an airline).

I think after a certain amount of time you don't have to declare it to an employer, but you'll have to check of course.

Would it be possible to have it pardoned by a judge? I'm no legal expert and not a resident of EU but I think it may be possible. Of course you have to disclose your criminal records because they can legally fire you on the spot without 2 week notice for lying on your application. Best to ask a lawyer.

not sure how much it costs (cant be more than £50 -£100 if that) you could apply for a disclosure scotland check see what it says, its what they use to check you out!

A conviction which is 'spent' under the rehabilitation of offenders act does not need to be declared for a flying job, nor will it turn up on the basic disclosure which is required for an airside pass. That is why they are called spent convictions and that is why it is called the rehabilitation of offenders act.

Whether they would hire you before it is spent I don't know, but if some overworked recruiter is going through a pile of CVs and there are 49 without and 1 with a criminal criminal record, what do you think is gong to happen?

It seems to me your best bet is to plan your training so you finish around the time your conviction is spent and start in the aviation world clean.

You could of course try CB1's suggestion and see what turns up. A basic disclosure costs £13.60 + £0.50 bank costs if you pay by card.

It not quite as simple as that.

There are three types of CRB check

Basic - Spent Conviction not declared
Standard - All convictions declared
Enhanced - All Convictions AND anything 'in-process' at the courts

Its a matter of discretion by companies what level of disclosure they use and what they regard as a no-no

I'd ask for an enhanced and you will get whats on the system
for you - You can check if its correct and it will facilitate any discussion as to what's OK by the emplyers and what's not

Sadly, however as IMCRenewal says, a conviction of any type will not help you in a competitive market..
