Out of interest what are the plane rental rates for bugsmashas in Oz.

I've been doing my licence here in Phoenix and I wet lease a brand-new 172SP for $USD100/hr and the basic 4 year old 172 for $USD85/hr.

I think these rates translate @0.77c to $AUD129 and $AUD110 respectively.

A 2004 Twin Piper rents for $USD145.00.

I'm looking forward to going back to Oz over Christmas and renting a plane for a bit of fun with my mate Creampuff (who tells me he has a ppl already).

Where are the best deals? How old are the planes?

Uhmmm. where are you planning to fly from ?

If from Bankstown (Sydney), have a look at 'Aircraft rates' at
http://www.schofields-flying-club.com.au/

Not a lot of new planes in Oz.
From http://www.casa.gov.au/casadata/register/annualreport.htm
there are about 12000 Australian registered A/C)

I think you will sorely be disappointed when you arrive here from o/s. Our rates are nowhere near that good, and even if they were you could expect to be flying something of the vintage of a stinson voyager or something similar.

Take a big bunch of bananas to the South Coast south of Sydney and you will negotiate some good rates!:} They have some 'nice' planes down there mate.

PS One of your preflight checks is to check the exhaust for misplaced hair pieces and/or banana peels! Look carefully or suffer the consequences.

PPS Also look for leading edge damage due to hair piece strikes (AKA a 221 incident report with CASA)

I am renting my C152 for US$48/hr wet - that's the same price as a car!!!!! (Although she is old - she does the job!) :D

I suspect that the "excessive" costs here in Oz would be mostly due to govt taxes on fuel - note a Goods & Services tax on the excise tax on fuel, crazy tax on a tax. Add the silly privatisation of airfileds and the resulting commercial rents and CASA costs and there you have it. I suspect that in the US they don't burden aviation with these types of overheads - particularly fuel costs and so it is much cheaper to fly. But then we have to pay for the pollies and their super superannuation don't we?

Lead Balloon, Take a look at
http://www.airborne-aviation.com.au/aircraft/

They have a couple of new build 172's and 182's and are an excellent outfit, but as you can see you will probably be paying almost double USA rates by the time you add on airfield and Airservices fees. If that looks expensive, you can always take a look at Europe.
