Hi,
In aeronautical terms could someone please define what constitutes a "sector" and how it differs from flying hours. Thanks.

A sector is normally from take off to landing unless you are base training.

i.e. LHR-CDG-LHR-MAN-LHR might be a day of work for a pilot but then it consists of four sectors. Not really aeronautical - more airline orientated. Flying hours are normally blocks on to blocks off.

A sector is one take-off followed by one landing (excluding circuits) and the time in the air is not relevant. Liverpool - Isle of Man is 1 sector which may last only 20 minutes whereas Sydney - Los Angeles in also one sector but may involve over 12 hours in the air.

Therefore is some cases the number of sectors flown is a better indication of overall flying experience than total hours flown.

A short-haul pilot with the same flying hours as a long-haul pilot could well have carried out up to ten times the number of take-offs and landings.
