Write Protected CD-RW?

I have an NEC ND-2500A DVD writer that supports DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-ROM, CD-RW (10x speed), CD-R, CD-ROM

I am attempting to back up some photos for printing onto a new from the box Packard Bell CD-RW (supported format). When I attempt to copy photos I get a message that 'cannot copy file xxx, disk is write protected'. When I look at the drive on My Computer it says it is a CD-RW so it does know what it is.
When I take same disk from machine and put in Toshiba Laptop with CD-burner it works fine.

Any ideas? I am stuck on this one.

Might need the DVD firmware updating.

I had loads of problems with "cheap" DVD disks in a NEC 1300A until I flashed the firmware. Then I could burn on anything.

The DVD disks contain a code which identify the media. The DVD manufacturers used to prohibit the burner (in the firmware) from burning onto certain cheap media in an attempt to get you to buy the more expensive disks.

You can also flash the firmware with a region free one...;)


Edited becasue I just read your post, and see you were using a "supported format" DVD disk. Oh well, it's the thought that counts :D

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem and have had this before and have no idea how I solved it then!!

I use Windows XP with SP2 added.
I have separate CD/DVD RWing drives, one a Sony CD-RW CRX225E, the other Sony DVD-RW DW-U14A. I inserted a brand new Phillips CD-RW80 1-4 multispeed disk and tried to drag and drop a small video (1.4MB) onto it. I then attemted the 'copy' selection on the left of the window pane, and also 'copy to CD' in the righthand click menu. All attempts gave message "cannot copy ###### the disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk". I decided to try another disk, the same type, and then also a TDK CD-RW 700/80min 4xMultispeed disk and all had the same problems. I decided to try and format the disk to see if this would solve anything, using the InstantWrite in Windows. 45 minutes later and the disk progress bar was full, only for the message "An error occurred while formatting the medium". I wasn't impressed, but then tried the DVD RW drive but the same again, I even tried the TDK disk in the CD-RW but again the same error message. I finally found a disk that I had used before (Phillips) that had a few files on it already and had no problems transferring several files across!!!

Questions then:
1. How do you remove the CD-RW write protection?
2. Why are the CD's write protected in the first place?
3. Why could I not format the disks?
and on a side note:
4. When formatting I have a choice of "UDF 1.50, UDF 2.00, and UDF 2.01". What are these and the differences and which should I be choosing? I normally use the default of UDF 1.50 but only as I know no different!!!

It could be that the Disk showed that another user account had control of the files. All you need to do is turn off Simple Shares then take control of all the files with your account.

All fixed and working with the help of the Customer Support line for my supplier. Thankfully its a low-rate call line or it would have been quite costly!!

Thought I'd let you know what happenned should this occur in the future.

I had to start-up in Safe Mode and remove both the CD and DVD and all their associated drivers before rebooting in normal mode and the 'new hardware' wizard re-installing them.

That was it and voila I can now format the disk to remove the write-protection!!

Anyhow I now have all the answers to my original questions so thanks to Richard for trying.

No doubt I'll be back soon though......... :uhoh:
