RYANAIR - $240M INVESTMENT IN NEW LIVERPOOL BASE
9 NEW EUROPEAN ROUTES FROM LIVERPOOL
TO FRANCE - IRELAND – ITALY - SPAIN

Ryanair, Europe’s No.1 low fares airline, today (22nd Nov 2004) announced it’s 12th European base at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport with an investment of $240M in 4 new Boeing 737-800 series aircraft and 9 NEW European routes from Liverpool to:

NEW ROUTES:
BARCELONA (REUS),LIMOGES, PISA, CORK, MURCIA, SHANNON
GRANADA, NIMES & VENICE

CURRENT ROUTES:
BARCELONA (GIRONA), DUBLIN, MILAN & ROME

Ryanair, which began services at Liverpool in 1988, already operates 14 daily international flights from Liverpool to Barcelona (Girona), Dublin, Milan and Rome. Over the next 12 months Ryanair will carry 1.4M passengers to/from Liverpool, saving consumers over €30M on high fares charged by Easyjet. This new base announcement and massive increase in routes, destinations and passenger numbers is also good news for the local economy too, because it will create and sustain over 1000 new jobs in the Liverpool area.

Also today, Ryanair announced new daily routes from Blackpool to Barcelona and Pisa to Barcelona. Ryanair already operates two successful routes from Blackpool to Dublin and London Stansted, and 5 daily routes from Pisa to Brussels, Glasgow, Hamburg, Frankfurt Hahn and London Stansted.

Announcing Ryanair’s 12th European base in Liverpool today, Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said:

“Consumers from Merseyside using Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport now have a real low fares airline offering fares that are almost half the price of Easyjet, serving 13 destinations throughout Europe and delivering unbeatable punctuality, and that’s Ryanair.

Our message to Easyjet is simple - You can’t match Ryanair’s low fares and you can’t match Ryanair’s punctuality and customer service either.

These new routes from Liverpool, with fares from an incredible £2.99 (excl. taxes) are available for booking right now, at www.ryanair.com, Europe’s biggest travel website.”

Neil Pakey, Managing Director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented:

"Ryanair's committment is a clear' coming of age' for Liverpool John Lennon Airport bringing an additional 1 million passengers through the Airport next year. Liverpool is clearly seen by the airline industry as a gateway airport for the North of England and in particular for the low cost airline market. Ryanair's decision to base four aircraft here will bring significant benefits for the North West including around 1000 jobs being created in the region's economy.

In addition, Liverpool's Capital of Culture status is further enhanced as more Europeans will be able to visit Merseyside via convenient direct flights and importantly with low fares."

!!!

Pardon me for asking, but why 3 x daily to Limoges and 4 x daily to Nimes?

What is the great attraction of these destinations?

Couldn't see Nimes four times a day myself and checked the online booking and it does indeed appear to be going on some days only. There's only so much Perrier water you can carry back from the bottling plant.

While I wasn't surprised by Cork and Shannon and the hefty digs at easyJ the decision to fly to NImes and limoges did - is this MOL turning his attention to flybe who are yet to announce their raft of destinations from LPL?

I think it was definitley a warning shot fired in flybe's direction. this is excellent tho. So much more scope for further development linking up with all other ryanair bases

Good news for those within travelling distance of LPL and also, in the short term for the airport, easyJet's reaction, if any, will be interesting.

Meanwhile I wish FR would stop going on about their $240 m investment as if they were literally putting that much into the airport, this is the "sticker value" of the 737-800s which they have already ordered and no doubt for considerably less than $60m each.

We're delighted to be bringing low fares to the people of [region].

Our announcement today represents an investment of [number of aircraft x $60m].

We'll carry [number of aircraft x 6 sectors x 365 days x 189 seats x 90% LF] passengers over the next year.

They'll save a total of [(average network carrier one-way fare - average FR yield of EUR40) x number of passengers] or [(average Easyjet yield of EUR62 - average FR yield of EUR40) x number of passengers]

[note 1: comparison with EZY disregards issues of average stage length - I would guess FR's extensive Ireland-UK network brings their stage length down compared to EZY.
note 2: comparison in general, especially with network carriers, completely disregards price elaasticity, i.e. assumes just as many people would fly at the higher price if only that were available]

These routes will create [number of passengers per year, divided by 1000] new jobs.

How exactly? The LPL routes are mostly to outbound leisure destinations. They're not going to encourage new companies to locate in Liverpool or bring lots of new business visitors from overseas. They may create jobs for extra coffee baristas or extra long-term parking attendants, plus a few extra estate agents specialising in French and Spanish property, but 1000?
