Qantas Direct Entry

Hello,

I'm sorry if this topic has been brought up before but I could not find much info on it.

Anyway, my question is in regards to Qantas Direct Entry. The minimum requirements for D/E is 500 command hours (Instructor told me that they get around 600 hours a year, this makes it sound like that the 500 command hours is easily achieved).

Although I heard from many pilots that most of the applicants who try out have 1000 - 3000 hours, so does this mean you have to get a lot more than the minimum requirements to be able to even have a chance to be selected and is it true that instructors get a minimum of 600 command hours a year? If there is anymore information that is related to the Qantas Direct Entry even if it's not relevant to my question, can someone please give me some? Thank you.

Yes, most people i know have a min of 1500-2000 hrs before their first call up for psych and skills testing, most also have some multi also.

NOTE: this is only for stage 2 (most people don't get past this stage)

They also seem to want some form of career progression, so bouncing around the circuit for 1500 hrs in a 152 as a grade 3 probably won't get you a call (but who knows the system is a mystery!!).

This si the way it is at the moment, but it is constantly changing.

Regarding the hours you fly in a year, it will very hugely from job to job, no real way of estimating (esp if you are junior).

Instructing and command time are two words that don't sound right together in the same sentence..... :E

Ibex, But when an instructor is flying with a student, etc. aren't they in command of the aircraft and therefore aren't they gaining 'command' hours?

As an Oz expat with heavy Boeing time is it worth sending a speculative application to Qantas before I get all my Oz licenses updated and sorted? Or should I wait so there is no come back?

Without wanting to hijack the thread my questions doesn't warrant a new thread.

Having been unsuccessful in Stage 2 in April I was told to reapply in 12 months. My latest update letter says I can 'Request a review of my file next April'. Does an update at the appropriate time consitute as a request or do I need to write a cover letter indicating I want my file reviewed?

Max - Check the Qantas web page and the recruiting blurb. Basically if you can not meet ALL of their requirements they are not interested - I believe they do not hold anyone on file unless they meet all these pre-requisites. That being said I reckon a letter explaining your current situation and when you expect to have all your licences will not harm.

QANTAS direct entry starts as Second Officer on 767, 747, 747-400 or A330.
Alternatively Jetstar employs F/O and Captain with a possible transfer in future.

There is only a small (and very select) group of people who know the answer to your question - the people at QF who handle recruitment. Send them a CV and have a crack. It seems that you meet their pre-requisites.
