Heathrow check-in firm collapses

About 900 workers have lost their jobs at Heathrow Airport after a company which provides check-in and other services collapsed.
Swissport UK Limited ceased operational activities on Tuesday before administrators were appointed.

The firm's activities at Heathrow's passenger terminals were being handled by other ground handling companies.

Other parts of Swissport UK Ltd's parent company, which formerly traded as Groundstar, is operating normally.

'Huge blow'

A spokesman for Swissport UK Ltd said: "It is with regret that following a number of years running an unprofitable business at Heathrow Airport and, more recently, extensive attempts to reverse the loss being sustained by the company, Swissport UK Limited will be placed into administration."

He said lengthy negotiations with both staff representatives and a major customer to find an alternative solution had been unsuccessful.

Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) leaders vowed to do all they could to help the workers.

TGWU official Kevin Hall said: "This is a huge blow for our members and for Heathrow. We will do all we can to look after our members' best interests, and our priority at the moment is just that."

Airport operator BAA said it is working closely with affected airlines to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.

Swissport UK Limited provides check-in staff for 11 airlines at Heathrow - Aer Lingus, El Al, Icelandair, Cyprus Airways, Switzerland carrier Swiss, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Greek airline Hellas Jet, Middle East Airlines, Air China and Turkish carrier Kibris.

Other stations refer to the (former) Groundstar stations, which are now all part of Swissport UK. However, only the Heathrow operation has been closed, the others are reportedly profitable.

Apparently Heathrow's Cargo and Executive divisions are not effected.

Maybe a moderator could arrange for the threads to be merged?

Swissport UK Limited is placed in administration effective November 16th 2004

Zurich/London, November 16, 2004 – Swissport International, the world’s leading airport ground handling group, is sad to announce that its subsidiary company Swissport UK Limited at London-Heathrow will stop their operational activities today, Tuesday morning, 0500 GMT.

It is with regret that following a number of years running an unprofitable business at Heathrow Airport and, more recently, extensive attempts to reverse the loss being sustained by the company, Swissport UK Limited will be placed into administration.

Swissport UK Limited is the airport ground handling business based in the passenger terminals of Heathrow Airport and does not include either the cargo service centre at Heathrow Airport or the highly successful businesses operating at other UK airports, either under or formerly under the Groundstar name.

Lengthy negotiations with both staff representatives and a major customer to find an alternative solution have been unsuccessful.

The remaining parts of the Swissport business in the UK, which previously traded as Groundstar, remain buoyant and are currently enjoying the prospect of healthy growth. The Swissport International business, across Europe and the rest of the world is similarly healthy and this announcement does not affect any other part of the business.

With a workforce of some 22 000 personnel, Swissport International Ltd. (which is majority-owned by London-based Candover Partners Ltd., a leading European buyout specialist) provides ground services for over 70 million passengers and three million tonnes of cargo a year on behalf of some 600 client companies. Swissport is active at 169 airports in 34 countries on four continents, and generated consolidated revenues of CHF 1.2 billion (around USD 925 million) last year.
