Dear Ppruners,
watch out about companies sending you for a type and asking you to pay big money.
there are not job and flight schools want keep their sims running (and flight instructor want keep their job).
Some pilots are ready to fork a fortune just based on a job promess.
Wait 2005 before to sell your granni!to pay or not to pay for a type. it will not give you a job. if airlines do not look for pilots, it means whatever you do, they will not hire you.
at this time, if you look on some websites, exemple: flight international, they are all running out of captains, it does not mean they will hire type rated pilots from "outside". they can fill left seats with their copilot. in some airlines, a copilot flies 40 hours instead of 80h. I means they have enough copilots who can become captain.
it will take a while before they call pilots from outside.better to wait for better opportunities.

How can a pilot work 80 hours each month when under JAA regulations they are restricted to 900 hours per 12 months?

Paying for a type rating can get you a job. Its a lot to fork out but if your committed enough you will get the job.
Pick your type rating wisely, do your research, dont get too excited and jump at the first one. I picked wisely and am now one happy man..
The days of airlines paying for a type rating are gone, and yes it does not help if we all pay for them but it is the way it is now, and if you dont do it i really think you will struggle, i should know i waited years.....
Like i say though pick wisely!!!

Sorry and rotate but your talking a load of tosh! This is not the way forward nor is it the standard practice for most airlines. You clearly have "waited years" for your first job and I hope it works out for you, but this is a definate last resort of desperation and should not be publicised as the way forward to get a job as stated in your post.
and if you dont do it i really think you will struggle
Utter rubbish - I know of 4 people, who in the last 2 months have secured jobs with Jet 2, Flybe and Loganair, i'm sure all have signed bonds but I do know for a fact, none of them have taken on anymore debt, on-top of their initial training costs.

Not that I agree very often with skyman68's views, but when will people see that if nobody paid for type ratings then the airlines would have no choice but to do so?
There is some very short term thinking going on here at the moment :(

Under JAA you can fly for a max of 100 hrs per month but 900 hrs is the annual limit
thus if you did fly the max every month you would have to sit on the deck for 3 months - and this has happened in certain low cost ops

Yes you do have to pay for Jet2 if you are not type rated.

There is only info on Captains at the moment, but it was the same for F/O's
With the slight extra cost involved most of the Jet operators make you pay your type now, not many of the turboprop operators have jumped on the bandwagon, yet!
